Veronica's Story

After HS I moved to Colorado, got married, had a son, and got divorced. We owned and operated a dude ranch in Buena Vista, Jump Steady. I then moved to Florida, remarried, and lived in St. Petersburg, FL for 26 years. I owned a number of business and then went to work for TECO Energy where I was the Director of Support Services for 18 years. We then moved to Thailand, and that's when the second part of my life began. You may remember that we were the AFS host family to Noi (Xuwichia) Hiranprueck in 1968. Noi and I are still very close. My husband and I have hosted his daughter, niece, and friends of the family throughout the years. Eight children in total, from 4 to 8 years each, through their teenage years. So obviously they owe us big time:) Anyway, we moved to Thailand in 2002 and I went to work for the Electric Generating Authority of Thailand. We were living on the beach in Phuket, Thailand when the tsunami hit December 26, 2004. I went to work for Dr. Porntip, the head of forensics doing some pretty nasty stuff. Four months latter, I came back to the states to get my head screwed back on. I went to work for Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, GA as their Director of Global Disaster Response. Three months latter, Hurricane Katrina hit and I spent the next 18 months getting 1,000 houses built on the Gulf Coast. I was in Guatemala when a tornado ripped through ...Expand for more
Americus and wiped out half the town. We moved up to Atlanta to be closer to the airport and a tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta. I was then offered the job of Chief Operating Office for Brad Pitt's foundation, Make It Right, in New Orleans. We lived on the Mississippi River, right across from the French Quarter, and helped build the largest concentration of LEED Platinum homes in America, right where the barge broke through the levy in the Lower Ninth Ward. Oh yes, 1 month after we moved down there, Hurricane Gutav came through. And yes, Brad is cute. Ever since the earthquake hit Haiti in January, I've been craving to get back into the disaster mode. So we moved back to LaGrange, GA and I went to work for WorldWide Shelters as their Vice President of International Field Operations. I now spend two to three weeks out of the month in Haiti. I am obviously married to a saint that let's me gallavant around the world while he takes care of the miscellaneous kids and my mother. Mom turned 90 last March. We had a jazz funeral for her in the French Quarter, so now she doesn't have to die! I did lose my son to suicide at the age of 23. My heart is broken, and this may be why I am so driven to work in disasters. Other than that, nothing much has happened. What's up with you? Update 2018 - Divorced the saint, mother died, living in Thailand selling airplanes with Noi:) Life is good!
