Vicki's Story
Life
Three years after graduating high school, I married Rick Mellott (Jeb Stuart High '63) and was married for seventeen years. I have two daughters who are all grown up with children of their own, ranging in age from 12years to 29 years (5 grandsons and 1 granddaughter).. I adore my beautiful grandchildren. Almost all of my family has relocated to the Shenandoah Valley. I retired in June 2014 from the City of Alexandria. I lived in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County and stayed in the No. Va. area except for a brief time when I first got married and lived in Luray, Va. I moved to Front Royal, Virginia in 2015. I have a lot of fond memories of my school years and the kids I grew up with. I joined Classmates to reconnect with my old friends so I hope to hear from some of you.
School
I went to James Monroe Elementary in first and second grades, then my family moved to Roslyn and I went to Woodrow Wilson Elementary from third to six grade. My favorite teachers at Woodrow Wilson were my third and fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Helen Wells, and my sixth grade teacher, Bruce Henderson. He was only 26 when he taught us and we all liked him. I remember the class play we put on. We raised enough money to buy all new raincoats for the school safety patrols and take all of the sixth grade class to Glen Echo Amusement Park. We had live chickens and a baby pig as part of the scenery. Sue Brant, who was the PTA president at that time, wrote the play and acted in it with us. ...Expand for more
It was about the Hatfields and McCoys and Linda Franko and I played sisters who fell in love with two brothers who were from the feuding family. I can't remember if we were the Hatfields or the McCoys. Sue Brant played Ma and Wayne Hawley played Pa. We lipsinked to songs, so it was sort of like a musical. I remember Andrea Koerner had a dress with black sequins that used to be one of Sue's and lipsinked to "I'm a Honky Tonk Angel". The play ended with a wedding. Acting in that play and remembering all the fun we had rehearsing and putting it on and going to Glen Echo is one of my best memories of school. I also attended Stratford Jr. High and graduated from Washington Lee. While at WL, I was a majorette which I really loved doing. I remember my english teacher, Mrs. Ponis, being one of my favorite teachers and Mr. Levin, the history teacher and who was also the basketball coach, was another one of my favorites. I also remember Coach Norwood. I think he taught me driver's ed. I made the mistake of learning on a standard shift. I never could get the hang of the clutch and didn't get my drivers license until I got married. My husband tried to teach me how to drive his car (a beautiful red convertible) but finally gave up and traded the car in for an automatic transmission car so I could drive it too. Lucky for me that in high school I had friends who drove. I had a great time in school and my best friends were Linda Franko,,Andrea Koerner, Sharon Tyler and Judy French.
