Vicki's Story

9/5/23--See update below 5/31/11--I've gone full circle and have been up and down and over and out--but hey, I'm still standing! It's been a great ride. I started working for the phone company right out of high school, earned my bachelor's degree from TCU, was promoted to St Louis, Missouri, got married, and was promoted a few more times. I left the Bell System and worked as President of a company that did pre-employment testing/screening, turned that company around and then got into academe'. Along the way, I earned a Master's degree and a doctorate (yes, now I'm a DOCTOR!--woo-hoo!). Hey, it comes in handy when making a restaurant reservation and saying it's for "Dr. So-n-so." Why, I'm always able to secure a great table--right by the kitchen! (Ha). Anyway, I also had two daughters, Emily (age 25) and Alison (age 23). They have blessed me with 3 grandchildren--Aubrey (2 1/2), Parker (10 months) and Adam (3 weeks). Professionally, I've been a college administrator for the past 20 years, from Campus President to Dean of Academic Affairs to my present position as an adjunct professor teaching graduate education courses online. I've had the privilege to travel throughout the US and Europe in my various positions. Personally, my husband of 29 1/2 years and I parted company a few years ago and 2 years ago I married Don, who's an angel. Way back in 2001, I had accepted a position as a college dean in Austin, Texas. At the time, my daughters came kicking and screaming (from St. Louis). Now you couldn't drag them out. Anyway, after my marriage dissolved, I took a position in Chicago (a great place to visit but living there is another story). I learned all there is to know about online learning and when I first met Don (also a Texan from Lubbock but living in Illinois), I said I was going to move back to Texas, so if you want to be with me, get ready to move. He said, "Let's go!" So in 2009, we married, I resigned my full-time position, and in 2010,...Expand for more
we moved back here to Austin where my daughters and their families live. Like I said, it's been a great ride--bumpy at times, but great nonetheless. My goodness how things have changed since we were in high school. This year, 2011, will mark my 40th college class reunion. Good grief. I don't look a day over 40--and certainly don't act it! I hope things are going well for all of you too. Update-9/5/23 The love of my life relocated to Heaven on 7/1/21. Today also marks the 25th year of my Mom's going to Heaven, She's interred at Mt Olivet and I visit her every time I'm up that way. I allso have fresh flowers put on her grave every 2 weeks, Don was cremated and I had a diamond made from some of his ashes. He's still with me everyday. After Don passed. my older daughter, Emily, and her family wanted me to move in with them. I said I would as long as they didn't expect me to be a babysitter, cook, maid, chauffeur, etc. (OK, occasionally is fine- that's what families do. I am their Nana, after all.) But I want and need my own space. I'm still reasonably active and vibrant with all my teeth and hair! But neither of our houses could accommodate that. So we sold both our houses and built one together. And i now have my own apartment with a living room, bedroom and bathroom--right off the kitchen. I have my privacy and my family close by. Yay! I'm blessed. When we finally merged--i purged and donated so much stuff to the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. It was good to purge because you can't take it with you! My 7 grandkids are Karen 17, Aubrey 14, Finn 14, Parker 13, AJ 12, Paisley 8, and Penelope (Ellie) 6. I live with Parker, Paisley and Ellie and it's a blast! Aubrey and AJ live about 5 miles from our house and I see them frequently. Karen and Finn live in Minnesota; they are Don's grands, but I still think of them as my own. Well, that's the latest update for me. I hope you're doing well. See you in another 12 years or so! 😉 😆 😉
