Vicki's Story
My high school years at BHS is one of my happy thoughts. It was a time of excitement and promise. If one was to have asked me, in the gym lobby, what I thought I would be doing when I turned 50... I would have responded;
*I will be living in a city.
*Great high profile job in the fashion world. * No Children * Traveling all the time. * Maybe married
As it is in reality, only two would have been correct. I attended college at ISU and received my BS in Home Economics Education. Now FCS, Family and Consumer Science. I had studied Textiles for 3 years and decided to get education with the degree. Good thing I did- I met Steve, the love of my life, my last quarter of college and we married, 1 1/2 years later. He brought me to rural Iowa in a family manufacturing business. Living on a farm, no city. I taught for a couple of years and then raising 3 children seemed to race the years by me. Killing another one of my predictions of a teenager.
I had always thought that I would further my education, then when I was close to turning 40, I thought it was now or never. I returned to school and received my Master's in Counseling. I continued as a school counselor, and loved most every minute. Loved the kids but the adults usually got in the way of success for students. Through my experience in counseling, I have found that it is better to listen more and talk less. Listen to understand and talk to be understood. I try daily to resemble that statement. Our family business has been a great gift in pulling together and striving for a common goal. Even though members might have a different way of doing business, the end result is the same. I believe this is one of my most valued lessons learned and growth from high school.
Raising 3 children on a farm was terrific. We planted and built anything at our whim. As the children moved to their adulthood, we have moved off the farm an...Expand for more
d to a neighboring lake town. Travel has kept us busy and with today's
technology, education is not only in the classroom. Good thing I was open to the wisdom of a great husband.
We encouraged our children to move away and travel....they all attended ISU and 2 have bought homes in our same town and the youngest is attending Law school in Iowa City. Not very far. Two of our children and one son-in-law, work in the family business. The biggest suggestion for a strong marriage and healthy family- Prayer and a sense of humor.
I am typing in the month of the birth of our first grandchild. A bit soft in remembering people of my past and the future that will come. I am thankful for times at Bellevue and the hours of work as a BVD. Truely, more of enjoyment and exercise than I knew of then.
I volunteer a lot in surrounding communities and was sharing "my life story" as a ladies' group speaker this week. Bellevue was a big smile to share. Many do not know of where I have come nor the people that I knew then, which is odd here... In small towns, everyone knows everyone and all their relatives.
I have only kept in contact with Laura Wallace and we too, smile of the memories of Bellevue.
I still have my BVD uniforms, saved with my wedding dress and our children's christening dress. Funny how that is. Even the head-dress is with me. Not that it is the stuff that is valuable, but it reminds me of youth and magic.
Magic is happening and I expect excitement around the month with the next generation coming. I look forward to a possible reconnect with classmates, but know that most I will have forgotten the names, but not the faces and places.
Thank you for spending time and reading my thoughts. I have become wiser and my acquired gift of patience, working on it daily, has come in handy many many years. Hope to see how the smiles have given each of us wrinkles. Vicki
