Victor's Story

Life Raised in the San Fernando Valley from birth through high school. Lived in North Hollywood, then Burbank, on to Canoga Park, and back to North Hollywood. My goal in life was set when my dad and uncles talked about about a depression that was sure to come. As a city boy I thought I better know agriculture and how to grow food. Therefore my goal was set in high school to learn about soil. Experts in the field recommended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where I received a B.S. in Soil Science. College studies were interrupted when drafted into the Army as a medic and sent to Puerto Rico for two years. 1957 was the year of graduation and a new job with fellow soil scientists at the State Dept. of Water Resources conducting agricultual water use and drainage studies needed to help design the State Water Project (canal). State work ended in 1986 and I remained in Sacramento selling real estate and became an independent commercial real estate broker until retirement. Being innovative was always my passion. This drove me to, for example, develop a CPM/PERT computer plotting software - 1968; design and build a Victorian home; and launch in 1996 a business to save space in landfills by feeding commercially cut lawn clippings to beef cattle. Early in my working years I met my wife, Dolores, at an IBM seminar and with a great marriage we raised a daughter, Cathy, and a son, Doug, - both college grads. In summary I have really enjoyed school life, work, family, retirement and all the wonderful friends along the way. P.S. In retirement we travel and I'm...Expand for more
into the family tree thing called genealogy. Workplace Fresh out of college 1n 1957 with a degree in Soil Science I was hired on with the Calif. Dept. of Water resources to conduct agriculture studies neccessary to size and build the Calif. Water Project. Such studies included water use studies, drainage studies, irrigation application studies, and classification of soils, and mapping of agricultural crops in the Central Valley. During the Project's design phase in was envolved in the computer planning and scheduling of design activities using PERT and CPM programs. During construction I worked with top management in various staff positions preparing management and budget reports. After construction the State Water Project I was a management analyst with the Calif. Dept. of Health Care Services and with the CALTRANS until 1985 when I retired from State employment. From then until final retirement in year 2000, I was in real estate and became an independent commercial real estate broker. This brought a great deal of pleasure meeting business clients from all walks of life. Those who I went to high school with me may remember I had jobs at Pioneer Oldsmobile in North Hollywood, Slick Airways in Burbank, Mourton's Mobile Station in North Hollywood, Phillips Plywwod in N.H., and my own horticultural service at Rathburn,s Deparment Store in N.H. During college years part and summer jobs were with the U.S. Dept of Agriculture as a food inspector, a mail carrier, farm work and fun in Tule Lake, CA, and at college as an attendant in their chemical laboratory.
