After high school I was taking some art classes at Fullerton JC but was drafted into the Army. While waiting for my departure to Fort Ord, CA where I took my basic training, I saw the face of someone familiar from high school, but I didn't know him. That person was Mike Dougherty. We became inseparable for the next three months. In basic training, we were not only in the same platoon, but shared bunk beds, he on the top bunk and me on the bottom. After basic training, I left for Fort Gordon, Georgia, where I went through Airborne Infantry Training and Mike went to Fort Knox, Kentucky. I had no idea where he went or what happened to him after that. At that time, everyone going through Jump School was going to Vietnam, so I decided to take a chance and wave Jump School. At the completion of my infantry training, I received my orders which said GERMANY! While in Germany, I went home on leave and married Denise Ricer from El Modena. I spent 19 months in Germany and when I was in Frankfurt waiting to rotate back to the U.S., who did I run into? No other than Mike Dougherty! It was a great reunion and we have been best friends ever since. My rank was Sergeant (E5) when discharged. After getting out of the Army, we moved to San Diego and I worked in freeway construction for about 7 years; after that, I worked for a roof trust company in Santa Ana for 9 years.
