Virginia's Story
After graduation I worked part time in a grinding shop primarily making the tumblers for Quikset door locks, and delivered parts to various businesses. I went to college part time.
I got married in 1976 and divorced in 1978. This put a hold on my prerequisites as I worked full time in a machine shop making hydraulic valves for aircraft.
I entered the RN Program and quit my job. I obtained my Registered Nurse degree in 1984.
I re-married in 1982 and we moved to Lake Isabella CA in 1985 after I graduated from the RN Program and I work at the small hospital here, Kern Valley Hospital. I have held various job positions during my 18 years there that include acute care nurse, relief weekend supervisor, night supervisor, SNF ADON and SNF DON while also doing home health and teaching the CNA classes at Cerro Coso College.
We had a daughter born in 1986. My ex-husband left when she was 7 days old. I divorced in 1988 and remain single.
I then went to work in Bakersfield CA at HealthSouth Rehab for 9 years. I took a year off and moved to Susanville CA. I then returned to Kern Valley Hospital in 2011 and continue to work in the SNF as a Night Charge Nurse.
For 10 years in Lake Isabella I volunteered for the Wildlife Rescue here and cared for numerous types of ani...Expand for more
mals such as song birds, raptors, squirrels, deer and reptiles under the direction of California Fish and Game.
My daughter married 10 years ago and had a son born at home and delivered by myself in May 2010. That made me a grandmother of an only child. And my only delivery so far during my nursing career.
I have endured 2 major Wildfires since I have lived in the Kern River Valley. The first one, when I lived in Lake Isabella, I had my neighbors homes beside me and behind me burn to the ground. I moved to Kelso Valley in 2012, still in the Kern River Valley, and in the second fire I lost my garage and had minimal damage to my home, also losing about 20 trees on my property here.
I remain in Kelso Valley where I maintain a Cat Sanctuary that started when the Erskine Fire left so many cats and kittens homeless, burned, injured and sick with respiratory problems. I have several cats, 2 hybrid wolf dogs, horses and turtles.
I have become a PCT Angel and shuttle hikers to and from Lake Isabella, Ridgecrest, Kennedy Meadows and Kelso. I also stock water for the PCT "hiker trash" at Kelso and Bird Spring Pass.
I am looking forward to retirement soon. What will I do? Continue caring for my animals, continue to hike, horseback ride and enjoy the rest of my life.
