Virginia's Story
I eloped just before my husband was sent to Vietman. I lived with his grandmother, in Fairfield, Ill while he was gone. I worked for the only CPA in the county. John got an early out to go to graduate school. While attending Southern Illinois University, he was asked if he would like to move to California in 1970, by Army Audit Agency, a former employer. We moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. His territory was the western USA. He was sent on audits of Army posts. The assignments were 3 months to 1 year long. We had a great time exploring our locations. He took a position with the great state of California as a tax auditor. I went to work for a local CPA in San Mateo. We built our first house in 1972, while the house was under construction I became pregrant with our daughter, Denise. She was born a few months after the house was finished. John took a position in San Jose and we built our second house in 1977. Debbie was born in 1979. The computer industries of Silicon Valley were just beginning. In 1983 we bought our third house. It was much bigger then the first two. I felt like I was married to the house. So, I went back to work and hired a pool man, gardner, and a cleaning lady. John stayed in the high tech industries while I worked for the largest commercial builder developer in Silicon Valley. It was very fast paced. My mother in law (a teacher) had the kids come to Illinois for the summer. That is when I decided I would not like to live in this house after the kids left home. We rattled around in the house, while they were gone.. We also saw how our children viewed...Expand for more
the Midwest as somewhat backwards compared to Silicon Valley.
I made sure the weekends were only family time. Companies were cutting back and we were asked to put in more hours. We made the decision to move back to Michigan. We are now grandparents. We live in Lansing and love it. Our girls made Michigan their home too. One lives in Westland and the other in St Johns.
I always wanted to be a traveler when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a not so hot idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. The wildest thing I did in high school was skip, once. I use to cruise Woodward and disconnect the odometer so my mother would not know.
When I get mad I express how I feel. I don't stay mad long. I have a long fuse. My favorite way to relax is being with the ones I love.
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Jerry Kelley, because we were such good friends.
I love Dancing with the Stars, and Wheel of Fortune.
My husband told me when we got married that the best was yet to be. I have had the time of my life.
My current age is 65. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be boring. I was so completely wrong..
My best friend would tell you I'm a lot of fun, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet.
Going to the Oak Park Fire Department, on Saturdays as a little girl. Joey Nowack and I would watch my dad and the other firefighters wash the engines. Then we would slide down the firemens pole.
I hope my old friends remember the good times we had. I left Michigan in 1968, I wonder if anyone even remembers me at all.
