Jameela's Story
Life
I now go by Jameela Lares, Lares from my ex-husband, and Jameela from living in North Africa where "Ginny" meant "my evil spirit." I decided I liked the name better than Virginia and changed it about 30 years ago. I received a Ph.D. in English from USC in 1994 and am now professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi (Hattiesburg), teaching especially John Milton and seventeenth century literature, Renaissance literature, literary study of the Bible, history of rhetoric, history of the English language, and British children's literature. I used to be in the LA area about 2x per year, though I have fewer and fewer reasons to do so as family members die or move. Another pull is research at the Huntington Library. I have spent a number of years abroad, mostly in weeks or months, but twice for more than a year. I love England, especially in London, where I teach a month course every other summer, and Cambridge, where I used to stay at a theological college. I...Expand for more
have also taught twice in France in our French study abroad program. In Pontlevoy, France, halfway between Tours and Blois in the Loire Valley--i.e., castle country. That photogenic castle with the river flowing under it was quite close, as were Loches (St. Joan spoke with Charles VIII there), Chambord, Cheverny, and Amboise (Leonardo da Vinci's last home). We also spent a week in Paris, time on the WWII landing grounds, and other places--my favorite was Mont St. Michel. I have been to numerous foreign countries for conferences and plan to do more this summer. I have two children and one grandchild, who all used to live with me, though they are still in town. My work as a professor requires lots of publications, but I have gotten back into writing fantasy fiction and hope to get some published as well. Most importantly, I'm a born again Christian, but that was true when I was in school. I attend the Anglican church, but I hope that I am--as C. S. Lewis put it--a "mere" Christian.
