Vivian's Story
I was one of two senior girls who made the long bus trip from Zweibruecken to Kaisersalautern American High School every day. After graduating in 1963, I attended University of California, Berkeley and then went on to get my teaching credential. Those were exciting times in Berkeley; I learned as much outside of the classroom as in. I taught school in Oakland during the heyday of the Black Panther movement- more exciting times. From 1973 to 1976 I was a Peace Corps volunteer in YaruquÃ, Ecuador. I fell in love with the people and the Spanish language.

rea, I became a bilingual teacher. I have taught every level from kindergarten to the Teacher Training program at Sonoma State University, and now I'm about to enjoy my first year of retirement. Along the way I finally remembered to get married and have children. My husband, Gunter, is from Austria, and both of my children are in college. My son, Sep, attends the University of Oregon in Eugene, and my daughter, Melanie, is starting her sophomore year at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Now I have time to think a little bit about where I have been and where I am going next.
