Laurence's Story
Married. Daughter, 40 - nurse, Younger daughter, 35, also a nurse. Son - now 37. US Army Infantry - re-enlisted for the pending deployment as he was about to finish his enlistment. He said he did not enlist to spend most of his time stateside - Texas - Fort Hood and then go home to CA. “What’s the point?” So he served in Afghanistan (under the commander of nothing and chief of talk who leads from behind - never has worked out well) How's that "Russian re-set" going? Wow - I wrote that last sentence 10 years ago - 2013. I guess given the second Russian invasion of Ukraine - the answer is obvious. How’s “nation building from home” going? The world is on fire. Again - last two sentences 10 years ago - 2013 and the fire has expanded dramatically.
Partner, portfolio manager, Monterey Custom Wealth Management (finally went the independent route). Loving that. Why did it take me so long? Comfort zone? Don’t know. Private investor. ense. Old BMW's - yes I still have them including a 1959 Motorcycle. My first BMW - a '71 2002 bought 42 years ago before terms like "prestige luxury brand" and all that (ugh) were devised (people thought it was a Toyota). I saved enough to get a new VW Beetle but discovered I could buy a two year old BMW instead for that money. Great fun.
I am a grateful and fortunate person. Until some brave people risked it all and left Delftshaven in wooden ships seeking religious freedom 400 years ago there was no beginning of the land of the free. Most people in the world still live under some form of tyranny and the poverty that goes with it. "By the crude bridge that marked the flood, there the embattled farmers stood. Their flag to Aprils breeze unfurled, and fired the shot heard 'round the world". The Minuteman statue, Concord/Lexington, Mass. Man, they were FARMERS against the most powerful army in the world. 1775. First blood of the American Revolution. Freedom isn't free indeed. As PJ O'Rourke said to his whining daughter re something she was lamenting that was "unfair": "Life's unfair. You were born here."
Some of you have been very nice - maybe too nice in how you remember me (mature??) but nonetheless I thank you for your generosity and hope you are all healthy and happy and well. Looking back, I can really appreciate what a really nice bunch of "kid" I had the good fortune to be in school with. Visualize World Freedom.
