William's Story
College
My college education was a patchwork quilt affair that took much longer to finish than I ever expected.
It began after graduation in 1968. That summer my father got a job with the Dept of Labor in Washington DC. We moved from Castro Valley to the Presidential Gardens Apartments in Alexandria VA where we stayed for 6 months before moving to Upper Marlboro MD. My draft board is in Alexandria VA. I was delayed getting into a college because the East Coast required a different entrance exams than the Left Coast. So my first experience with college was at
Prince Georges Community College in Largo MD. Spring Semester '69. My fast friends were Jay Casper, Ray Jarrad, and George Failor. The neighborhood group of friends included: George Neiman, Terry Schok, Leslie Barr and her sister Rosalyn, Carole Mangum, Debbie Schulte and Sandy Davis. I also remember that was the summer of the 17 yr Cicadas.... big noisy orange-eyed ugly-ass bugs everywhere. Jay Casper helped me snag ...Expand for more
a job working in a reproduction shop at George Washington University
in Alexandria Virginia. We were contracted to the Pentagon and our cammanding officer was General Abrahms. I worked under Franklin Bradley and my co-workers were Woody Woodard, "James", and Leo Lyman.
Leo used to be a bartender and would bring in shakers of very dry martinis which he placed in the freezer part of the film refridgerator in the morning. At 3:00 PM we would invite the girls from the Illustration Dept next door into the Repo Room and kick our feet
up on the presses and sip very cold and dry martinis. I remember passing out one day as I rose up from my seat and sorta caved froward toward the window between 2 presses. Someone offered to take me along to an outdoor concert in upstate New York one weekend that summer but I had to work. Yea, that was the weekend of Woodstock. Oh well....
I met and dated a wonderful girl, who was a secretary in the same building. Her name was Bonnie Bailor.
