Walt's Story
My Dear Walt passed away in Jan. 29 at home in Jackson.
Walt was born in 1946 in Jacksonville, FL., to Walter Louie Farmer and Verona Metts Farmer. He grew up in Jacksonville with his younger brother, Malcolm Farmer.
As a kid Walt began learning piano and playing his parents' favorite songs. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 1968 with a major in piano and a minor in voice. He taught music and American history in Jacksonville and in San Antonio.
Walter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1969 and attended officer training school. How wore many hats in his military career, including Titan II launch officer, missile procedures trainer and basic training squadron commander.
After being diagnosed with throat cancer in 1071 and lung cancer in 1976, Walt retired at the rank of captain. He was a patriot, for he not only served his country in the Air Force but also worked with veterans associations to help others who served our country.
Walt wouldn't let cancer slow him down. Returning to his music roots, he worked as a radio disc jockey and news announcer at Trinity University and two other commercial radio stations in San Antonio. He worked on radio voice-overs and TV commercials and owned Gramophone Records, a retail store in San Antonio.
In 1984, Walt and I married (Kathryn Rupert) in San Antonio. We had many wonderful years and adventures together. Our love of nature drew us to many countries and ultimately to Jackson Hole. Here we enjoyed hiking together and Walt captured indelible memories through his photography.
Walt worked with the Jackson Hole Shootout Gang, for a few summers, he volunteered at the Grand Teton Music Festival and was a house manager for several years. His love of history drew him to volunteer with the Jackson Hole Historical Society.
Music once again surfaced through his volunteering for the Jackson Community Radio station KHOL. He worked on international shows, Latin shows and big band shows.
He was an avid amateur astronomer who loved to share the love of the night sky with friends and visitors.
One of his proudest moments was becoming an author. He publi...Expand for more
shed a book, "Wyoming: A History of Film and Video in the 20th Century." Included in the book is a film history of the making of "Shane" in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He also published "Shootout on the Town Square: The Story of the Jackson Hole Shootout."
Walt was a good soul. He loved his family and friends and felt it was an honor to have so many in his life.
Walt is survived by Kay, wife; Malcolm, brother of Jacksonville; Debbie, sister-in-law of Jacksonville and nephew Matthew Farmer and niece Amanda Farmer, both of Jacksonville. He was loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed. Buddy and Ninja, Walt & Kay's purring kids, are missing his spirit as well.
Walt requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Fisher House, FisherHouse.org/donate or Fisher House Foundation Inc., 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850-5168. The nonprofit helps families of veterans.
Walt's website (theastrocowboy org) is still up and you can see a few more articles that were written about Walt.
