Walter's Story
I served in the U.S. Army for 20 years in levels of increased responsibility, culminating my service at the rank of First Sergeant. Military service offered lots of travel around Asia and Europe. I left the service with a BA in Psychology. I moved to Walla Walla, WA, which is where Kelly was born. I worked in the Walla Walla, WA community for several years in various administrative functions and completed a Masters in Social Work degree. I currently work at the Washington State Penitentiary as a Psychology Associate (Social Worker). In this capacity, I work with offenders with mental and physical health issues that are nearing their release from prison who could benefit from additional help in overcoming obstacles that have hindered their success in the past. ical assistance through the Department of Social and Health Services, Veterans Administration, and Social Security. I conduct brief counseling sessions to determine if there are gaps in their release plan that could be addressed prior to their release; provides documentation to the release community professionals to help insure a continuum of care; advocates for family reconciliation; makes referrals; conducts Group Therapy classes encourages offenders to seek higher stages of moral reasoning; offers hope for life after prison; and encourages socially acceptable behavior that will ultimately break their cycle of recidivism. I enjoy family, exercise, reading, music, Yoga, travel, and the natural beauty of the Northwest. I have 2 grandchildren that live nearby that I enjoy spending time with.
