Walter's Story

Enlisted for US Army WORWAC (helicopter flight school) my senior year, completed a single year duty in Vietnam and left the Army at the first opportunity, after 2 years 8 months 10 days. The Army's real bossy and they make you dress funny. After the Army I wanted to be 'normal', had various 'normal' jobs- 8 in one year; got married and had 3 kids. I was an irresponsible, miserable hard-drinking SOB for 11 years. Returned to flying helos professionally in 1982, teaching people to fly at a little school in South Carolina. From there to the Gulf of Mexico, flying various offshore contracts, 14 years. Lived in Louisiana with my family 4 of those years. We moved back to Augusta and divorced in '89. I deserved it. Back to Louisiana for me. I liked "Cajuns'. Married a second time in '92, seems to working out, so far. Our son was born in '97, so I resigned to be a stay at home dad for 4 years. That is the hardest job I ever had. 2001, I returned to flying, accepting a position with...Expand for more
an HEMS operation here. I worked with some absolutely great people as an HEMS pilot, at the base, in the crew and those calling for emergency and hospital to hospital transports. For the pilot, patient transport is just another flying job, 'we' don't get involved with patients- I couldn't tell you anything about anybody I ever carried, I didn't ask, didn't look and didn't want to know. Listen to, watch the medical crew and the pilot can discern when it's becoming urgent. Like when 250 lbs of medic jumps on the patient and starts CPR, chest compressions. You FEEL that in the aircraft, I'm getting used to being retired. I miss flying, it/that is/was the love of my life. Yes, my wife knows that. I would do and did anything to fly, but I can't turn back the clock- I'm not 42 anymore. I'm getting used to being retired. I especially like getting a full night of sleep, on the same schedule, every night. I read a lot, no fishing, golf or hunting. Born to fly, but I won't fly to die.
