Walter's Story
In 1966, after 6 years at San Diego State University, I went to Anchorage, Alaska to take a job teaching electronics at a new high school. I loved the lifestyle and the job. I decided to stay on for a few more years - it has now been 44 years. The outdoors is more than can be explained here: camping, fishing, hunting, boating, flying and building a cabin in the woods is a great lifestyle. Flying is now the focus for our Alaskan activities. We have had a float plane since 1976 and it is the only way to our cabin located 50 miles from town...no roads...no services...everything comes and goes by float plane.
I found myself single again in 1977 and I married Dale in 1980, a beautiful, wonderful mother of 3 girls. We had a 4th girl 2 years later. I taught high school 28 years ...Expand for more
and coached girls gymnastics for 17 years. I retired to have more time for hunting, fishing, and flying. Dale taught 13 years of middle and high school and was the National Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the year in 2000. She taught at the University of Alaska Anchorage for 5 years.
With friends from Texas, we built a hunting camp in northwest Kansas, 40 miles from Cecil Carender's ranch. We now try to spend 6 - 8 weeks each spring and fall in mid-America.
We have had the pleasure of hosting Lakeside friends Fred & Linda Oslie, Virginia Kouns Embry and her Mother Edna, Cecil Carender, and Ron Rays' Mom and Dad. If you were in Anchorage, sorry I missed you and if you are coming, let me know. I'm hooked on Alaska as you can see, but Lakeside will always be home.
