Walter's Story

So far life has been pretty good to me. I have been in the service of my country ever since I left high school in 1983. I started at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO and after 25 years have finally gotten an assignment in my hometown of Savannah,GA at Hunter Army Airfield. I'm currently serving in the Army as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 ( CW4), flying AH64D LongBow Apaches and getting ready to redeploy to Iraq this fall. I got married the first time in 1986; had two daughters, Courtney (1990, South Effingham Class of 2008) and Chelsea (1994). I got divorced in 1998 ( former Gwinea Dixon, ECHS Class of 1985). I got married to my current wife, ( LeighAnn Shrader, Clarksville, TN High Class of 1981) in September of 2000. LeighAnn is an RN and is currently working for Select specialty Hospital inside of Candler Hospital. LeighAnn is the person I credited for making me a much better person. e (1986) who is currently a student at Armstrong Atlantic in the Nursing program. I'm also a very proud ' Poppe' of my grand-son Ethan (2004). LeighAnn, Ashlee, Ethan and I currently live in Richmond Hill, GA. The 'Army Life' has been a challenge but also very rewarding. I've been able to see many of the 'cesspools' of the world and a few great places along the way while training men and women how to employ Attack helicopters against common enemies. I've delayed my retirement from the Army until at least 2013....hopefully that will give me a chance to figure out what I'm suppose to do for a living when I grow up. As stated earlier, I left right after graduation and haven't spent much time near Effingham County for the last 25 years. Like everyone else, I've 'grown up' alot since 1983 and hope to rekindle some old friendships and maybe spark some new ones via this website.
