Walter's Story

July 2010 - We now have TWO granddaughters: Arianna was 2 in Jan-2010. Emma was born in May this year. Work Life Have been with the US Office of Personnel Management since July 2009. The office is inside a former limestone mine about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. Was laid off with no notice in April at Carnegie Mellon University after 7-1/2 years. They wanted to restructure the Procurement Department and four of us got 'axed' so they could do so. Now, have a 108 mile daily commute, but I am thankful to be employed again. Looking for a job at age 58 is tough! I joined the Air Force a month after graduation in 1972 to fulfill service obligation & to resolve vulnerability based on draft 'lottery number'. AF tried to make me a linguist then a fire fighter for almost 2 years before trying me out as a contracts specialist, which I then spent 24 years doing. Served total of 26 years and one month, retiring at Buckley Air National Guard (now Air Force) Base in July 1998. Moved to Chicago to work for General Services Administration, a Federal agency, for three years. Worked eight years for Carnegie Mellon University, still in the procurement/contracts business, until they decided to replace most of the department. No children of my own, but I mentored many other parents' kids along life's way. My wife & I have two black cats between us: my 16y/o roadside 'throwaway' from Okinawa who is diabetic; and 'our' female (about 6y/o) who may...Expand for more
have been abandoned. College Did my undergraduate college years immediately following high school, for which my grades suffered due to lack of maturity and focus on my part. I finished in 4 years, one of only two of a group of six friends. Earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration. Began a Master's program with Troy State U.-European Division (of Troy, AL) while stationed in Brindisi, Italy in 1979. However, due to workload and location, was unable to finish my last four courses until 1987-88 when I was stationed in southern Illinois. I completed courses with Webster University of St. Louis, MO, for my Master in Management degree from Troy State. The graduate degree probably helped me make SMSgt, my last promotion in the Air Force, and I believe it has also helped me get jobs both times since I retired from military service. Military Joined the Air Force in July 1972 to fulfill my military commitment vulnerability under the "draft". Spent 24 years in contracts and purchasing, also known as 'procurement'. Served total of 26 years, retiring in 1998. Stationed in Texas, California, Kentucky, Florida, Italy, Turkey, Illinois, New Jersey, Okinawa, and Colorado. Also visited numerous other places during that time including Hawaii, Guam, South Korea, the Azores, and Germany. Retired in Colorado in 1998. Relocated almost immediately to Chicago area for 3 years. Moved back to western PA in late 2001 to marry the love of my life.
