Walter's Story

After Lamar, I went to Texas Tech. Don't remember much of those days. After all, it was the 70's. A lot of sex, drugs and rock'n roll vaguely come to mind. Settled down in '75, got married and started the family life. With mouths to feed, other than my own, I worked in the oilfield (and still do) and went back to school (for like the 4th time), to get ahead in life. Being a pipe fitter for Brown and Root was OK, for a while, but not my idea of a career. In the meanwhile my two great kids were born: Zach and Rachael. Both grew up in Houston and now have college master degrees. I am proud to say that my son (Zach) is a humanitarian working for 'Doctors without Borders', in Africa and the middle east. My daughter (Rachael) is an education administrator and has recently settled in East Texas with her husband and numerous horses, dogs and cats. I am still hoping for grand kids. My oilfield construction work supported the family and required some travel in the US and overseas. Quit a good job in 1991 to start working self-employed as an oilfield construction consultant. Really great work, when you can get it, if you know what I mean. Divorced and turned 50, in 2001. So, with the kids on their own, the ex-wife in Oklahoma (happily remarried) and no grand kids to play with; I started a quarter horse ranch just north of Navasota, TX. My barrel racing, Aggie daughter was the main inspiration, for this endeavor. There, I still spend a lot of time working on the two-mile long rock driveway or repairing the old farmhouse, barns and fences. I have some trainers (Aggies) living there that care for my horses, their horses and a few boarders (not to mention 4 dogs and a dozen or so barn cats). Seasonally,...Expand for more
they manage the breeding and foaling, for me. The few cattle that are on the place belong to someone else (thank goodness). I also maintain a house in Northwest Houston (SH 249 / Willowbrook area), that I had purchased back in '85 (flooded in 1994, 1998 and 2001) and is where I stay, when doing business in town. This house was deemed my problem, in the divorce decree. She got the gold and I got the money pit. Besides my ranching and consulting work, I am also trying to start a shuttle bus company (WALT inc.), in the NW Houston area, which will take people, who live there, from their home, to the Willowbrook area bars and restaurants and home again. The idea is to save lives, by providing a service that will stop drunk driving in the neighborhoods and at the same time give people the opportunity to go out and party, without worrying about trying to illegally drive home afterwards. I have been working to start this business, for quite a while and have purchased a few shuttle buses and setup an office for dispatching. But WALT inc. unfortunately, still is not in operation. Mainly because, for the past 3 years I have had to travel, to work, in Equatorial Guinea (West Africa), Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Trinidad, to keep the bill collectors happy and of course; I like to eat too. Recently (August of 2008), I landed a contract consulting job locally (Channelview) and this has given me new hope for starting the shuttle bus business, which is still more of a dream than reality. But I never say never and continue trying to get this bus business started. If I can eventually save just one life from being another drunk driver fatality; then all will be worth the effort.
