Wanda's Story

I have had a good life since the good ole` days of High school. Made my fair share of goofs...and thankfully they were ah ha moments that I learned valuable lessons from. After high school, I married my high school love and we had 3 great kids. The marriage went south after 13 years, but as most of us have learned by now, life does go on. I sang professionally with various bands as their lead singer and hostess for about 8 years but it made drinking and doing drugs to easy for me, so I quit.(all 3) I went on to marry another guy who gave me a lot of insight into another whole world that I dare say I wouldn't have ever learned of otherwise. John was a loving ole Italian...10 years older than myself. (which was GREAT for my self esteem!) He was however a man on a destructive path in his life and a tormented man. I won't write his life story however. He died nearly 5 years ago and is at peace now. He was a man in and out of prison because he kept returning to riding the white horse. It would be his one demon his whole life and our whole marriage. He was a lousy role model for my kids, but I couldn't have found a man that would love them more as his own & they loved him very much as well. He proudly stood and gave his oldest step daughter in marriage before he again returned to prison. It was because of John that I found my lives calling. I began to go into the prisons in California singing and playing the piano and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. I learned alot of the CDC through the years. I found that the prison system is set up for parolees to fail when they get out. There are of course those who should never be let out; I am not speaking of them. I am talking of the many I found who perhaps given drug counseling as a mandated program (which it's not...but A.A is) ...might very wel...Expand for more
l make it. Our state and many others- warehouse these people because of one reason - money, not because they are really interested is seeing those who have redeemable qualities - get out and stay out. I found that my idea of the stereo typed inmate as I may have heard about on TV, is not the greater majority that we hold there. I spent the better part of the past 18 years trying to be a light that might help some of these folks get out and somehow make it in society in spite of the broken states prison system. I love teenagers and am blessed that 4 of my 9 grandkids have hit their teens. Until a couple years ago I enjoyed going into the Juvenile Hall trying to perhaps get a few young kids that were making really BAD decisions to listen to my warnings and change their choices while they had time. About the past 8 years, and until recently, I was doing an outreach to the many homeless in our city. Did you know many of them are Viet Nam Vets? Some of em` drink a lot...too them, it is the only way they know to drown the memories of death in their minds of that war. Some just aren't as capable to deal with such things as others. Many of them have died and I now see a whole new batch of homeless men. I can't help but wonder what they were like 40 years ago. There's a lot of 'war stories' that sit on the corners of our city pan handling. I wasn't a popular kid in school; I don't think I was considered the nerd or geek either...just walked to the beat of a different drum...and I still do. Back then I hated it...but I was too stubborn to try to fit in. Now I like who I am...it has worked for the past 20 years make a difference in a few lives. I would love to hear from those who remember me & don't mind the 'different drum' personality. :-)) Hope to hear from more than one or two of ya...:-))
