Wanda's Story
Life
My Spouse
I met my husband, "Big" John Rickaway
when I was living in Houston (back in
the late 60's / early 70's). He saw me
move into the apartment unit where he
was living and determined to meet me! We married on Valentines Day in 1972.
We were married for 34 years. I lost him on May 25, 2005. Then, just 8 months later, I lost my Precious Mama on Jan. 23, 2006. During this time I was desperately ill & many, including my Doctors, thought I might die too. But evidentally Our Good God had other things He wanted me to do, so I am still here. Deeply Scared, but still here! I retired from teaching in the Spring of the 2009-2010 - which was exactly 50 years from the year I started teaching in 1959-1960.
My Pets
My cat, Gomez, is a black & white
domestic long hair. He was born wild at
Wm. B. Travis High School (Austin, TX)
where I teach. He has a mostly white
face, with a black "mustache". I named
him after Raul Julia, the actor who
played Gomez (with the little black
mustache) in the Adam's Family. Plus,
the student population at Travis HS is
85%+ Hispanic. Therefore, "Gomez" was
MOST appropriate. He is a unique Kitty
Kat! He has our house running pretty
much to suit him!!! LOL!
My Mom, Mrs. Zula Jones,(who taught at
WRHS) now lives with us. She has a
white, Tiny Toy Poodle. His name is
Trey Toi. He is 8 or 10 years old. He
and Gomez are great friends. Mama told
Trey that we "got him a Kitty to play
with" when I brought Gomez home when as
a baby kitty. So, Trey helped raise
Gomez and they think
My Kids
Our daughter, Lori Meyer, (age 40!) is
in the school business too - but not in
the classroom like her Grandmother was
and I still am. She is in the Financial
end of it. She worked her way through
college while working for a School
Business ...Expand for more
Office. She came straight out
of college {Sam Houston State
University} (as an adult) and into the
position of Treasurer of the Austin
Independant School District. She left
there to take the position of CFO in
another Texas School District. During
that employment, she injured her back.
This eventually led to back surgery (not
long ago).
Lori is a member of, and is on the Board
of, TASBO (Texas Assn. of School
Business Officials). She has been
teaching the course she developed (and
wrote the curriculum for) in Investments
that is required of all School Business
Office Personnel - Business Managers, up
through and including the Supts. of each
District. She needed to to be able to
work at home following this serious
surgery, so she is currently working for
Region 7 (out of Ft. Worth, TX)
converting her Investments Class into an
Interactive Computer Course that
can be offered to Districts who find it
difficult to get their Business office
Personnel into a live class.
She has one son, Matthew, who is a
Senior in High School this year. Her
husband, Steve, owns his own paper
recyling company here in Austin. She
keeps the books etc. for that company
also.
My Job
This is my 41st year to teach school!!
I am a Math teacher in High School. I
have taught Math for all or part of my
teaching day for 40 of my 41 years.
That one other year, I was the Choir
Director for the Westwood ISD in
Palestine, TX. I had the 6th grade
choir, 7th & 8th grade choirs, and the
High School Choir - ALL! I really
enjoyed that year! I was needed back in
Math again the next year, however.
Here in Austin, I teach Geometry (my
FAVORITE) at Wm. B. Travis High School
in the Austin Ind. School Dist. I still
enjoy teaching school.
