Wanda's Story
Life
On the road consistently since 1998. I left a 12 year aviation career to chase Games as a Certified Event Junkie.
After discovering the lure of the Olympics, while providing emergency management expertise to the Atlanta airport, I relocated to London and then Paris for a short term walk-about prior to returning to the States to import art from South America and Southeast Asia. Had a wonderful time discovering artists in the bush and developing my Spanish language skills.
After the twin towers came tumbling down, I made a run for it and started teaching business communications in south China. Escaped provincial China after one year and landed in Shanghai where I freelanced as a trainer and an editor until joining the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee in Qatar as a Contingency Planner. No, I wasn't required to wear an abaya....but I had to cover my evil shoulders. Weekend escapes to Dubai and Manama (Bahrain)were common. An outstanding Middle East experience for sure.
In 2007, I returned to the Middle Kingdom and rented a spacious flat just steps away from the Olympic Park in Beijing. Returned briefly to Shanghai and was very fortunate to meet some extraordinary people there as head of VIP Hospitality for the 2007 Summer Special Olympics. After Special Olympics, I returned to Beijing to train young Chinese professionals, then accepted a crazy gig managing the Olympic Program of a European financial institution where they kept me "imprisoned" at the Ritz Carlton for several days.
Reached a brand new HIGH during Beijing's Olympic Games when I became an honorary Jamaican and befriended members of the Jamaican Olympic track team, reggae ...Expand for more
artist Julian Marley (son of you-know-who), the US Water Polo team and a host of other really cool folks. Among the MANY spectacular events of the Games, I attended a USA (redeem-team)basketball game with a Pioneer from the class of '79. (We made prank phone calls to our peeps back home during half-time and giggled and grinned.)
Was fortunate to attend the Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia in October 2008 and meet many fine Asian athletes and entertainers. Loosely followed the path of the Eat, Pray, Love author, but still haven't been to Italy yet. Spent a day poking around the Petronas Towers and chatting with random strangers in markets of Kuala Lumpur before making it back to the US in time to vote for President Barack Obama. Froze my butt off on the Mall and would do it all again for the thrill of witnessing the inauguration of our nation's most inspiring President yet.
Have been lobbying for years to join the World Cup in South Africa, but landed back in Asia Pacific with a gig that returned me to my aviation roots. Currently, commuting to Asia from south Georgia and looking to relocate to the DC area soon.
I entertain couchsurfers a bit and have made friends with some exceptional people along the way (including an American astronaut!).
My soulmate and I met in Llasa (Tibet) where he saved me from certain death in the Himalayas. I give thanks and praise everyday for surviving the arduous journey to Mount Everest.
Made my international stage debut in a play called Sistah Speak at the Fringe Theater in Hong Kong, December 2009.
