Ward's Story

Updated Dec. 2009 - lots gone on the last few years. Many years since SMN..........I have lived in Houston since 1972 when I started Rice University. After completion of an MS in Structural Engineering, I started work with Exxon and have worked for ExxonMobil ever since. After 32 years, I am now the senior structural engineer for our Development Company - what that means is I am responsible for making sure all our new offshore developments stand up to hurricanes, ice, and earthquakes and I also am responsible for our offshore LNG projects too. I trouble shoot when things get in the ditch (another job term is I am now an "old f..t"). I have really loved working there and work with a wonderful bunch of folks. I have also traveled the world at their expense (have been a Continental Platinum member for many years). Although I can now officially retire, I'll probably stay another 5 to 10 years, assuming the business stays good and I keep having fun. Recent major projects have been our Adriatic LNG terminal offshore Venice Italy and our Sakhalin Island Russia developments. My wife Denise and I have been married going on 31 years. She is a geriatric physician. We have been wonderfully blessed with 4 children ages 18 to 26. The oldest (boy) is a Geology graduate from University of Texas and works for Halliburton. The next (girl) is a Texas A&M Accountant who works for KinderMorgan, a major gas pipeline company here in Houston. She has also been married two years. The next (girl) is a special needs child. She works at Kroger and takes a few classes at our local community college. The youngest (boy) is now a sophmore at Rice here in Houston and is studying chemical engineering. test blessing is our Christian faith. We attend Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church here in Houston. This is our real life's work. I would love to share this with you if I ever get the opportunity in Houston. Denise and I took two interesting missions trips this past year. Last winter, we went with Living Waters to Nicaragua to drill a water well. This fall, we went to Uganda where she worked some hospice medical issues. I have a eclectic list of interests and hobbys. We have a little ranch northwest of Houston in the country and spend considerable time there now and will likely retire there in the future. You can often find me on my tractor, cutting firewood with my chainsaw, or hunting feral hogs. I also play a considerable amount of piano. I bought a nice 6'8" Kawai grand piano several years ago and got serious about taking lessons and practice. I also run and bike a fair bit. I even still do 5 and 10km road races, although I have slowed considerably over the years (most recent race was 22:46 for 5k). We also have a bloodhound. He showed up as a stray at our ranch and is now 104 pounds of slobbering dog. I really don't have any connection to KC anymore - both Mom and Dad are dead and none of my siblings live there. Best wishes to all of you and I will try to make a 40th reunion if we have one. My biggest worry, like many of you, is how badly our country is now being led by Obama and the Congress. Hopefully, things will be better in 2012 when we get together. The best way to reach me is at my business email: j.ward.turner at exxonmobil dot com (Classmates does not like email addresses!). Best wishes and God Bless to all of you who spent a minute to "catch up".
