Warren's Story

After graduating from GHS I went straight in to the Marine Corps, where I pulled a 6 year stint. In the service I started as a gunner on a 105mm Howitzer cannon, right after Field artillary training. I also learned to drive the m60A1 Patton heavy tank and other self propelled armored vehicles. After an accident injured my hearing, I changed MOS's and became an Explosives Transport Specialist (suicide jockey) transporting live explosives of all types on 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton all terrain trucks. I also went through Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare training. while not as "glamorous" as being a pilot or anything, Ground transport is of extreme importance in supporting ground troops and mobile artillary. I also became an expert marksman with the AR15 combat rifle. I remained so until my honorable discharge in 1984. had I been smart I would have taken the education bonus and got some college in while I was enlisted. I should have kept up with my art skills as well, but those kind of fell by the wayside as I went through life. I was stationed in 29 Palms, CA and Okinawa Japan with an 18 month stretch on the DMZ between North and South Korea. much smarter than your average soldier, I had a reputation amongst my officers as someone who could think on his feet and change plans and tactics on the fly as the situation called for it, and while in Korea in 1982 I was appointed to assitant motor transport chief in charge of my units entire fleet of vehicles and their deployment and upkeep. while doing so I gathered an additional reputation as someone who could "get it done". during this time my unit was awarded several combat readiness merits as we were the only unit not to suffer a vehicle breakdown, loss, or deployment failure due to the extreme weather, occasional sniper fire or accident. not an easy task when you consider we had over 150 heavy and light trucks, jeeps, and all terrain multi-wheel transports that had to be maintained, fueled and deployed all over the DMZ in constant readiness. I also personally supervised a 50 man crew of drivers and support personell. all this while also being a suicide driver right out there with my men. my truck was personally shot at on 3 seperate occasions. on 2 of those I only lost a windshield. On the third, my co-driver was injured by sniper fire and I had to perform emergency first aid, as well as still perform our rounds that day solo after getting him to the field hospital. I received a Meritorious Mast award as well as a combat ribbon that day. when we returned to Okinawa, I was quickly promoted to corporal and was offered a bump up to Sergeant if I would have re-enlisted. but, I did not and moved on to my civilian life. I wasn't quite as good at that, though. after being married twice and a few long term relationships, I ended up with 2 daughters, now 15 and 28 respectively. it's a long story. I guess I can't complain, as they are pretty good kids. Savanna (youngest) is doing great in school, is learning the violin and likes video games of course. my oldest, Kathryn is more my "black sheep" child and I have 3 grand children from her. 'nuff said about that. I'm currently in a long term relationship with a woman who is unable to have children but is a good mom to both of mine. Many of you that may remember me from Mr. Neslen's home room art class may be surprised to find that in my working life I have spent most of my time as an industrial maintenance worker, keeping machinery running in manufacturing, factory and line production environments. I have just always had a knack for machinery, it seems. right now I actually work for a company that manufactures and delivers concrete burial vaults to cemeterys. these are concrete containers that the actual caskett fits into when someone is buried. I double as a maintenance man but spend ...Expand for more
a lot of my days driving to cemeterys and putting up the canopy, chairs, sound system and the lowering device and greens over the actual graves. with so many cities becoming incorporated these days it is actually cheaper for them to hire a third party like my company to bring in the vault and the other equipment and to do this setting up than it is for them to keep on hand all the related equipment. It's a pretty thankless job, but someone has to do it of course. I see myself as sort of the doorman between this world and the next, as I am the last person to be with the deceased before thier final rest. it's not glamorous and I'll never get rich but this is more of one of those wierd times when the job sort of chose me, if that makes sense. I've been at it for going on 14 years now, and have a reputation (again) as someone who "gets it done". I do like the people I interact with out in public and the chances are good that I may have laid one or more of your relatives and loved ones to rest. I'm the guy that you never see because my job happens before you get to the cemetery and finishes after you leave. I don't really have any religious affiliation and I guess you have to be a little different in your mindset to do this job in the first place. it pays my bills, though. in my spare time I am sort of a self-made computer tech and rebuild and refurbish computers out of my home. sometimes I make a few extra bucks doing this, and I am keeping these machines out of our landfills as long as possible so I guess in some small way I am doing my green part for the planet. although truth be told I cater mostly to an older market of folks who just aren't ready to let thier old and familiar machines go just yet. so most of my work here consists of upgrades and rebuilds. all of this was self learned from a book and an old computer back in '95, and I've been doing it since then. all of our household computers right now are machines that I have rescued, upgraded and in many cases made them perform way beyond thier factory specifications. All in all, although not wealthy in the monetary sense, I feel that I am a "success" in life. I never did get to write my novel or become an artist, but my kids love and respect me and my family relies on me. my parents are both gone now, and since I am an only son my family line will end with me when it comes my time to go. but I live in the small town of Tooele, where I am known and liked. I never had drug or alchohol issues and drive a late model car. I haven't vacationed to speak of in decades. but I am fairly healthy at 53, still have a full head of blonde hair and most of my real teeth. I still love great sci-fi and adventure movies and still actually read real books when time permits. I'm kinda partial to Dean Koontz and Stephen King. I love the Uncle Johns Bathroom Readers as those are just chock full of stuff that is cool to read. some of my friends from my school days have gone on to be business owners and high powered business people with the ulcers, divorces and personal troubles that traditional "success" can bring. I say no thank you to those kind of pressures. probably most of you don't really remember me from those high school days. I wasn't popular (except with my teachers), wasn't on any sports teams and always seemed to befriend the more different people than society would have liked me to. I can't say if my being there for any of them changed thier lives or outlook or just made high school a little more tolerable for them. I hope so, but you never know. that about wraps it up, in a nutshell so to speak. so to those in the class of '78 that went on to greatness and made it, I commend you. to those who didn't quite go that way, I feel for and understand you. and to those very few who might, just might remember me, I sincerely thank you.
