Warren's Story
Life
Warren Knight, August 2003 (40th Reunion):
Left McLean High School with fondest of memories, which continue to grow warmer with time . . .
Went off to Va Tech for a degree, then to Oklahoma City, Viet Nam, the Mojave Desert, back to Northern Virginia, back to LA, then to Cape Canaveral, back to Northern Virginia, finally settling in Leesburg.
Along the way climbed Mt Whitney, walked across the Grand Canyon, jumped nude out of an airplane, and skied off the top of a 17,000 ft mountain in Iran.
Always wanted to do 4 things. Serve my country in the Navy or Air Force (scripted, plus love of aviation). Serve in the Peace Corps (acquired from someone close). Drive a truck (simplicity and wanderlust). Be a teacher (because worlds are there to be opened).
Entered the Air Force directly from college. Natural progression. Tried to morph military service into Peace Corps during Viet Nam by volunteering for a Civil Affairs position. Dreamed of building windmills for the simple folk in a war-torn land. Got the job. Received orders to go. But at the last minute the position at Bin Thuy was shut down, leaving me "homeless." The Air Force found another solution and assigned me to Air Viet Nam. The experience was something like the Mel Brooks movie, "Air America." I worked closely with the Vietnamese, so it was satisfying. Beautiful people, beautiful country, tragic war with tragic losses. Hope to go back some day.
Came home to run flight tests in the desert. Sold missiles to the Shah. Launched rockets from the Cape. Explored the heavens at NASA. Built spy satellites for the CIA. Have started to ease back a bit. Listen to a little Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney. Ride around the country on a Harley rediscovering friends I've lost touch with over the years.
Found (and lost) my first love in high school. Worked too hard in college. Partied in Oklahoma. Did a dumb thing and got married just before going to Southeast Asia. Fixed ...Expand for more
it when I got home. Fortunately no collateral damage.
Partied around for another 9 years. Stayed tight with friends from McLean. Bonds grew stronger. Loved again (McLean again). Lost again. Mostly stayed on the upside, though.
Came back to Washington for school in '82. Needed a date for the graduation party and struck up what I figured would be another safe long distance romance (I was due to go back to California upon graduation). Darndest thing happened. Fell in love again. This time it stuck. She was a tough cookie (still is). Finally got comfortable with being in love and with the notion of marriage. Had an old time bash of a wedding. Most of the McLean gang were there, even the contingent from California -- Ashton, Gary, Walter, Butch, Fred, Rosie, Beth Ann, John & Judy Chiles. Carol Spooner Knight came with her parents (she and I had lost my brother Bob while I was in school). Walter's mother came, too - our beloved Evelyn who loved and cared for so many of us through those formative years. Eklund made a phenomenal diving catch for the garter!
Twenty years later I have two beautiful kids just starting on their journeys through high school and beyond. My daughter is 16, going into her Junior year. She's got her act together a thousand times better than I ever did. Then there's my son, 13, going into the 8th grade. Good Lord, he reminds me of me! What will I do if he does what I did when I was where he is?
Think I'll go out and TP somebody's house . . .
So how do I score against the Big Rocks? Did the military service thing. Reached for the Peace Corps, but no banana. My Harley grounds me and satisfies my truckin' wanderlust. I get to teach my kids in ways I never dreamed. I guess 3 out of 4 isn't too bad. And the show ain't over, either.
So what have I learned? It's your family and your friends, stupid. And when your family are your friends and your friends are your family, life is good.
Love to all,
Warren
