Patty's Story
Life
They say at 50 you're what you were meant to be. Well I think that's true. I think I was meant to be happy, and I am. I finally married my teenage crush, and the love of my life. I have 2 wonderful sons. Sadly, I lost my husband a few years ago to cancer. I retired after nearly 30 yrs w/the phone co, I miss the people there, but not the work.
I am a Christian. I like to spend my spare time gardening, quilting and working on home improvement projects. May 2008 Update: Got bored back to work... full time =]
I have 2 adorable grandsons that calls me "Mammy". They are the true joy in my life.
School
Wesley Gaines Elementary School. Mrs. Fadden, Mrs. Hurst were just a couple of my favorites.
Alondra Junior High. Mr. Stevens, Art Class
Paramount High School, I was inspired by a couple of my teachers. Miss Mary Lash (what a neat lady), I took her sewing & cooking classes until I was gone from there. With her teaching and the influence of my Mom & Grandma's, I must say I can do both of those things very well.
Mr. Richard Scott, (Art class) was my other favorite. Always with a smile and a little twinkle in his eye, a pleasure to be in his class.
Me & a buddy got to one class early once and could smell the lingering aroma of pot...a smile on the teachers face, realizing they had been caught, continued to do us little favors until our last days in the class. We would never have told anyone, but the little favors were cool.
I think if I could do it all over again, ...Expand for more
I would be a little more assertive. Not keeping an older boyfriend as a safety feature, then maybe I would have been open to dating guys at school. Also I would have gone to more sports events, like our football & baseball games.
Workplace
Babysitting a cousin for the first 1st few months after graduation.
Moved on to the race car industry, picking up & delivering auto parts, welding and heat treating gears, glass beading...not making enough money.
Finally got an answer & interview from one of the many utilities companies I applied to. Hired in 1973 by Pacific Telephone. Worked as a long distance TSPS Operator until 1978, became a clerk, then an order writer, then finally in 1980 to the job I wanted from day one, in the central office as a frame technician. Kept me doing what I love, working with my hands, and kept me in shape. I worked in many different offices, Compton, Bell, South Gate, Torrance, Gardena, Huntington Park, Lomita, San Pedro, Wilmington & of course Paramount. Stayed doing that job until I retired at the end of 2002. Decided that training the younger ones meant that they would merely watch how us older ones did the job...too frustrating to stay any longer. One of those plus - plus offers came, and I took it and ran.
Update 2007: I took a part time job at a church office as a secretary. Gets me out of the house.....I was getting bored. You can only clean and quilt just so much =]
Newer update 2009: Now working full time as my church / Pastor's secretary. =]
