Wayne's Story
Since I finally paid the fee and rejoined this site thought I would make use of it and briefly explain what I have been up to all these years.
After HS I graduated from the university of Iowa with major emphasis in Journalism, political science and Am. History. I ended up working for the same organization my entire career. I began working at the Grant Wood Area Education Agency in CR as a PR specialist. In the early 80’s I was asked to become the Government Relations Specialist (fancy way of saying Lobbyist) for the statewide AEA system at the Iowa legislature.
Like any profession that job had its pluses and minuses, but by 2011 I had reached the point that I was so sick and tired of politics that I decided that since I was in a position to do so that I would retire relatively early. The other main reason that led to that decision and almost of equal importance was that after 60 years I was tired of Iowa winters. Truth be told I hated them more each passing year!
The timing of the retirement turned out to be a lucky decision. We had planned on spending about 3 months each year renting a place in Arizona, but as it turned out our first year in AZ housin...Expand for more
g prices were depressed in the area and we were fortunate once again to be in a position where we could buy a condo in Sun City West, Az. So ever since we have spent about 7 months in Az. and the rest of year at our place in Coralville, Ia
Waking up to sun and warm weather virtually all year round is great. While in Az I am actively involved in a senior softball league and as a member of a softball travel team that plays other retirement areas and in tournaments. I also golf several times a week. When I am home in Iowa for the summer I volunteer at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
From a personal standpoint I have been married all these many years to my wonderful wife Char. We were blessed with two children, a son and a daughter. Our son teaches and has for many years coached area HS teams in both football and basketball. Our daughter Sarah is a law school graduate and is a partner in one of the largest law firms in Chicago.
I only have one complaint now. After counting down the days until I could retire and wanting that date to hurry up and arrive, I now wish that time would slow down so I could enjoy this period in my life as long as possible.
