Wayne's Story

Life The most significant events in my life occurred in 2003. I was married in Hawaii near Wakiki's famous Diamondhead Volcano. I honeymooned in Vegas (profoundly cliche’, I know), and bought a home in West Palm Beach, FL. No children yet, but we are honored to be Godparents to my 4-year-old nephew who lives with us right now. As I recently told a friend, I am learning that genetics have very little to do with personality, he is certainly a mini me. In 2005, the company I was managing closed after 17 years. I was the Director of our corporate office in Boca Raton. I "dipped my pen in the company ink" when I met my wife on the job. Anyway, I borrowed money from my 401K and opened a gift and greeting card store in Ft. Lauderdale. Obviously not my life’s ambition, but business ownership definetly has its perks and certainly beats the hell out of office politics. We've opened a website and are doing fairly well. In my earlier years, I really wanted to get out of KC and explore, so I attended Florida Atlantic University as a journalism major. I wrote for The Independent Atlantic Sun, a small college publication that lost university funding and became self-supporting. I really struggled with finances in college and was forced to live illegally in my girlfriend's dorm. My girlfriend also became pregnant, but miscarried. Ultimately, I learned some tough lessons. My introduction to campus life in Boca Raton, FL was great. I attended college with a minor celebrity named Carrot Top and was placed at the Radisson Hotel for part of my freshman year because of limited dorm space. FAU paid for everything! Nice, huh? In the summer of 1991, I returned to KC for summer break and interned with the KC Star under Melanie (Mel) Gray. I didn’t have a car, so I actually drove to the interview in an ice cream truck (my original summer job that year). I also attended the National Association of Blac...Expand for more
k Journalists Convention in downtown KC and did some networking. None of which proved to be very helpful in my future endeavors. I still love writing and want to work with an independent publisher. Please email me if you have any contacts. When I returned to campus I had a big scare. Everyone on our campus was really promiscuous--so many girls! Anyway, when I started losing weight, found my wounds wouldn’t heal, and I had absolutely no energy or appetite; I thought, “God is punishing me–I have aids.” It turned out to be diabetes. My blood sugar was over 900 when I was admitted o the hospital. My wife has diabetes, too. I'm thankful to be alive and in good health. I've been going to church ever since. I have one (14-years-old in 2006) brother named Marcus in Kansas City. My Dad remarried when I was still in college. The irony of trying to get pregnant really comes into play when your 51 yr old is still reproducing. Anyway, my stepmother (Percetta) turns out to be a classmate’s aunt–April Watson. That's Wayne's World in a nutshell. I've reconnected with some old friends lately, but I'm still looking looking for my cousin Angie Smith and my old partner-in-crime, Howie Hardcastle. School From my sober memories of the event, going to the national journalism convention in Chicago was probabaly the most fun I had in my high school career. Our staff wreaked havoc on the Chicago Streets. It was more like a two-day party than a meeting of the minds. Nick K. ran up his hotel bill with calls to a 900 line and David G. was worried for months that his brief encounter with a girl named Beth made him a Daddy. Mrs. Foreman was in shock and hated all of us (except for Jeff Field, who attended all the scheduled conferences and was the only one who took the trip seriously). This definitely marked an all-time low for our journalism staff's illustrious history. We were a motley crew.
