CLASS OF 1961
Hayward High SchoolClass of 1961

Weldon's Story

Well, fellow classmates, it is a long and boring story!! As a Hayward High Class of 61 Graduate, I only attended Hayward for the last semester of my freshman year then through my junior & senior year. I lived in Alameda then San Leandro, then Hayward, then Texas, back to Hayward. then back to Texas & finally in Hayward through my Jr. High and High school days! Prior to that, Texas, San Pablo, Sparks Nevada, So. Lake Tahoe, Alameda, Tokyo, Japan and back to Alameda, all before I entered Jr. High School! All in all, 13 schools in 12 years. After graduation and turning down an appointment to West Point, I worked in Hayward at Treasure Island Food Products off Sutro St, right next to Grand Lanes bowling alley. After about a year I took a job at Don's Chevron Service just north of the high school on Foothill Blvd. Directly across from IHOP on the corner of Rex Rd. I worked there until 1966 full time and then went into construction, doing concrete cutting and demolition work as an interim job while preparing for a job in law enforcement.. I was a part time Alameda Co. Sheriff's Dept. Game Warden for almost 5 years. I was hoping to make a career out of the game warden profession but after being passed up for full time for a son of a county commissioner, I decided to go into the State Fish & Game program. Not having the college requirements and then finding out that part time work for the County didn't count towards the 2 year law enforcement requirement. I elected to join the Calif. CHP to gain that experience. Having passed all of the tests and being accepted to the CHP Academy was a good thing but then got hurt pretty bad on a job in Feb. 1968, just two weeks before I was scheduled to attend the CHP academy in Sacramento. The injury took that option away at the time but also afforded me the opportunity to get deeper involved in the Concrete Cutting business! Once I saw the business from both sides I decided that it was my career opportunity in the making. I worked until 1975 for American Concrete Sawing in Hayward then broke off and started my own company with some other guys in 1975. It grew from just the 4 of us to now employing 65 full time people and doing well over $12 million a year in gross business with 3 branch operations in No. California. I married my high school girl friend, Barbara Grieve, in 1963. We had two sons, Michael in 1966 and Sean in 1969. Both of them now work in the business and will eventually take it over completely. Mike runs the operation out of Yuba City and Sean runs the main operation in Union City. We also have a 3rd branch in Manteca. Our family was an outdoor family, much like I was as a kid. We enjoyed water skiing for years up at Lake Berryessa where both boys grew up swimming, skiing, kicking back and having fun with their buddies. Both are happily married and Mike & Tracee have two kids, Corey and Amber and 2 grand-kids with a 3rd on the way. All of them live up in Yuba City or Sacramento area. ul wife Rhownica and 4 step kids including a Marine and Army Capt. A great bunch to be proud of for sure. The all live in California from San Diego north! Barbara & I have lived in the Hayward, Newark, Fremont area until 1997 when we bought a home up in Chico with the intention of retiring up there. After almost 20 years of commuting back and forth and most of our family being here, we moved back to Oakley about 5 years go. No! I haven't retired and now instead of driving 400 miles on the weekend, I drive 600 miles during the week back and forth to Oakley! So much for cutting down on the road time wasted in traffic instead of kicking back watching TV! As for activities, I grew up in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, you name it. We still enjoy a good part of that even though I don't do near as much fishing as I used to and almost no hunting since the boys grew up and away from home. i am an avid trap shooter. I shot heavily until 1987 then quit to try competitive bass fishing and did so for a number of years, Up to 30 events a year for a while. Then, after 27 years I decided to get back into trap shooting to re-connect with lots of the friends I had made in the 60's, 70's & 80's! We now pull a small RV trailer when we go out of town and take our 90 lb Golden Retriever, Cody. with us where ever we go. I think the other participants know him better than Barbara or me, at least they always ask about him! Since our 50th reunion I haven't seen or talked much with any of our class but still do some email with several of them. Kenny Olivan retired as a Santa Clara Sheriff's deputy and he and Mona moved to Texas. Where making ends meet on a fixed income is a lot easier! Randy Morgan made the move to Idaho years ago after he retired as a state correctional officer. Some of the gals and guys from the class are still in the area but there are only a few that I still communicate with. Same with Barbara who graduated in 1962. Their class seems to be able to always have a 5 year reunion and we always attend to hook up with some of our old friends from those years too! I love the old things we grew up with and I can say that our generation was exceptionally lucky to be grow up in at that time. Look at all of the things we have seen in our lifetime. I had a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 R-code, 427 when I got married. I have two of them now. One is a 500 and one is a 500XL. Both with 427's, 4-speed, get there quick cars! You have to appreciate the fact that we could identify our cars, make, model, year almost immediately where as today, who can tell the difference! When I drive either of mine, a lot of people look, stare and wave! . When a new Lexus, Mercedes, BMW or Tesla goes by, no one even notices! Our's were a great time to live, great cars, great people! Other than that, a fairly calm, event-less life I have lived since graduation. See, I told you it would be boring! My best to all HHS grads in all classes! Weldon Birch HHS 1961.
