Welton's Story

Colonel Welton Chase, Jr. is currently serving as the 27th Brigade Commander of the 1st Signal Brigade. In May of 1987 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation he was designated a distinguished military graduate and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps. His previous assignments include Instrumentation Engineer at the Test and Experimentation Command (TEXCOM), Platoon Leader and Battalion Maintenance Officer 67th Signal Battalion, S-4 25th Signal Battalion, Assistant S-3 and Company Commander of D Company, 327th Signal Battalion (Airborne), and Operations Officer United States Army Space Command ¿ Europe. He was assigned to American¿s First Digitized Division the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Fort Hood Texas as the S-3 operations officer of the 124th Signal Battalion, and later as the Assistant Division Signal Officer. Lieutenant Colonel Chase was next assigned to the United States Strategic Command at Offutt AFB, Nebraska where he served as a design engineer for the Mobile Consolidated Command Center and later as the Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief (CINC). In June 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Chase assumed command of the 501st Signal Battalion, 101st Airborne Division in Mosul, Iraq during Operation Iraq Freedom I. al Troops Battalion and led them during combat operations in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom IV. Colonel Chase¿s military schools include the Army¿s Ranger Course, the 7th Special Forces Airborne School, the 82nd Airborne Division¿s Jumpmaster Course, and the 101st Airborne Division¿s Air Assault Course. He has also graduated from the Battlefield Simulation Course, the Joint Space Fundamentals Course, the Signal Officer¿s Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, and the United States Army Command and General Staff College. He holds a masters degree in Telecommunications from the University of Colorado - Boulder. Colonel Chase¿s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with one campaign star, the Southwest Asia Defense Medal with three campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation with oak leaf cluster, and the Kilborne Leadership Award. Lieutenant Colonel Chase holds a Master Parachutist rating is Air Assault and Ranger qualified and has earned the Combat Action Badge.
