Wes's Story
Update: Celebrating my 2nd year pastoring Campbellsburg Baptist Church, in Campbellsburg, KY. Campbellsburg is approximately 45 miles NE of Louisville, KY.
Life
After FWB I moved to Atlanta to attend electronics school. While in Atlanta I met my wife, Susan Evans.
Susan's parents were Southern Baptist missionaries to Kenya, East Africa for 30 years.
Sue, as she prefers, was in nurses training at Georgia Baptist School of Nursing.
Sue and I married January 10, 1976. We now have two children Glynn (27) and Jessica (21). Glynn was married October 2002 to Amber Mitchell and they recently announced that they are expecting my first grandson.
Sue changed professions some years back and is now a Programmer Analyst for Kentucky Farm Bureau. I was the Pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church. I'm currently unemployed unless you count catching up on tasks at home being employed.
My mother remarried after my dad passed away in 1978. She is now Hattie Brockway Wood and lives in Ft. Walton on the Island.
School
Activities at CHS: Choir, Madrigals, Musicals - Lil' Abner (Zeke - husband), You're A Good Man Charlie Brown (Linus), If A Man Answers (Stage Manager), Clubs - Beta Club(Sophomore or Junior), ICC(Senior),Music Club (President, Senior)
College
After high school I went to Atlanta to attend DeVry Institute of Technology. I left Devry in 1975 and bounced back and forth between FWB and Atlanta until 1985. In 1985 I entered Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Pineville, KY. After one year there I transferred to Cumberland College in Williamsburg, KY. While at Cumberland I earned a B.S. in Sacred Music. I then moved to Louisville, KY where I sttended The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Workplace
After high school I did a number of things. Some of you may remember Brockway's TV in FWB. I had helped my Dad there. In connection after high school I went to Atlanta to attend DeVry Institute of Technology. While in Atlanta I worked for UPS as a package loader, as a car stereo technician, and then as a janitor at First Bapt. Ch. Atlanta.
In 1978 my Dad died so I came back to FWB to help my Mom run the shop. We closed it the following summer. I then worked for the First National Bank as a teller until I got mono. After that I worked for PRD Electronics. The next Spring I moved back to Atlanta to work for Craig Corporation again repairing car stereos. I then managed to get a job with MSI. MSI made computer terminals that were used in groce...Expand for more
ry stores for inventory control. I worked for them from 1979 to 1985. They have since been bought out by Symbol Technologies.
In 1985 I moved to KY to attend college where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Music. I had worked as a part-time Minister of Music for Central Baptist Church in Douglasville, Ga. While in KY I worked for First Baptist Church, Harrogate, TN and Calvary Baptist Church in London, KY as well as doing music for revivals, etc.
In 1991 my wife, two children and I, moved to Louisville, KY for me to attend The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. While at seminary I worked for a couple of local computer stores repairing computers.
In March 1992 I was called by Davis Memorial Baptist Church as their part-time Minister of Music. Until 1997 I had several jobs with the church as I came on full-time; Min. of Mus., Min of Mus. and Ed. and child care center director. In Fall 1997 I became Interim Pastor after the pastor left and in March 1998 the church called me as Pastor.
One other thing I did for a while at Davis Memorial/Lakeside is I had a 1 hour radio program for three years that I produced with music from church and a sermon.
I now (2008) have two grand-children, Landon & Rylan, and a new son-in-law (2006).
Summer 2007 I visited FWB and got bummed out with the town. As I was taking pictures around town, one guy followed me to a stop and asked why I was taking his picture. He had called the police telling them I was spying on him. I think I managed to convince him it wasn't him I was taking a picture of. I have no clue who he is but I wonder if he was doing something to feel guilty of or was just very paranoid.
The other thing that bummed me out was getting a speeding ticket crossing the bridge into Okaloosa Island. I will say the policeman that stopped me was pretty cool and nice.
So suffice it to say that I'm kinda spooked to visit the town again. It just ain't the same as 1973.
Since 2007, I've floated around with different jobs. Most notable I was Min. of Music at a church here in Louisville, and then I was most recently a Store Manager for a local AutoZone store. I left that job in December 2015 and am now kinda, sorta, looking for a new job.
After AutoZone went to work for NAPA. Left NAPA at the end of 2017 and took a job as Interim Associate Pastor of Music and Missions for Green Acres Baptist Church here in Louisville, KY. Presently looking for and sending out resumes for a pastorate position.
