Wes's Story
After high school I studied music at UNT for a while. In 1983 i moved to Los Angeles and worked in the record business. I had met several people while publishing the Chicken Scratch in high school and one of them called and offered me a job. I didn't really like L.A. so moved back to Texas after a year to plan the next phase of my life. In the mid-80's I lived on Lake Texoma and worked as a bartender at Pompano's bar at Loe's Highport marina. It was a great job for a water lover like me. Had lots of fun and managed to save some money. Eventually I took the knowledge from that and became wine/liquor buyer for Whole Foods Market. Worked at the original store on Lower Greenville from 1988-1994.
After two years away from the company, Whole Foods transferred me to Los Gatos, California in 1996. It was there I met my wife and finally got married (at the age of 40). The ceremony was held in the chapel built for the 1960 winter Olympics at Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe. Our tenth anniversary is January 2011.
In the bay area I took advantage of all the musicians available and started playing drums again. Put together several horn bands. Also had an instrumental surf band based called. We did a couple of shows with Dread Zeppelin for a winery owner friend. Th...Expand for more
e horn band (Goodfoot) played the San Jose jazz festival in 2002. I spent most of the summer of 2002 in Sedona, Arizona playing with several local bands and partying. Sedona is a great town to spend a summer..
In 2005 we sold our bay area house and purchased one on the Oregon coast. Lived in Portland but in 2006 we moved to the coast full time and are retired.
Anne has an MBA from Cal so she figured out how to make early retirement work. She is a volunteer at the Oregon Coast Aquarium and is a business tutor at Waldport high school. I'm a high school sports umpire (baseball, football, basketball, softball). Work football and baseball in Salem. Basketball and softball I stay in Corvallis. Life is nice and mellow after Northern Cal. House is on 1/2 acre, two minutes from the beach. Not playing much music these days. Still fool around on my drumset but until I find some like minded players don't have much hope of playing out around here.
The only downside to living in this beautiful place is finding musicians with my taste in music. Most are into blues and metal around here. But I've got plenty of sports to keep me busy so can't complain too much.
And that's the last 30 years in a nutshell. Hope to hear from my long lost classmates out there.
