Wesley's Story
And life rolls on.....
I'll try to keep this short.
I left St Mary's School in 1968, as my parents moved from Regent Park to Parliament Place. I went to school at Deshaye in Albert Park from 1968 to 1973, then moved on to Sheldon-Williams.
With Sheldon-Williams Collegiate's 50th anniversary back in June of 2006, I had first posted a bio for anyone to read what had transpired at that time. This bio has been updated periodically, as our lives do change or evolve. I was through SW in 2000, and it appeared smaller now, but it still smelled the same.
I later picked up the remaining credits to complete my Yr 12 at Leboldus High in the south end, then moved on to the Canadian Army for a career.
I married Rozanne Wray in Regina back in 1991, and later left the Canadian Army at the rank of Sergeant in January 1995. We had decided to immigrate to Australia to begin a whole new life..
I had enlisted with the Australian Army (Engineers) in Sydney not long after my arrival, and after a year long of 'snail mail' banter between the two country's training commands. Considered a lateral transfer, I came in as a, Sergeant. Things sometime don't go to plan, and Rozanne and I were divorced in December 1996.
I became an Australian citizen in 1997, and I am happy to have dual nationality, which is a great asset, and a true privilege to have. I later met my second wife, Nancy in north Sydney in 2000.
We lived in Cronulla, near the beach in Sydney's south, until I was posted to Queensland, where I lived until July 2014, residing on Bribie Island, about 70km north east of Brisbane.
At my last posting I was with an Infantry Regiment of the Australian Army. We were based out of Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane. I was tasked with many positions within our Company, and ended up a Platoon Sergeant.
About Iraq. At that time, I was with an Armoured Regiment, and volunteered to go. We ended up being hand picked into the only Australian Combat Team in the city of Baghdad, We ended up leaving the safety of Australia in August 2006. Destination Iraq (via Kuwait). We were sent right into the middle of Baghdad. Shy of some SASR elements, and a Logistics HQ, we were it. In southern Iraq, we had a Battlegrouip near Basra, but worked independent of each other. , We left Iraq at the end of March 2007..
During my time there, I was a platoon sergeant for my duration there, serving alongside a mixture of Infantry, Armoured Corps and Military Police.. It was truly an insanely dangerous place to be, and when the time came to be replaced by our reinforcements, we were all bloody happy to rotate out.
So, not long a...Expand for more
fter my return from the war, things did not go to plan 'part two', so after me being home for only one month out of fifteen, Nancy decided to move on, so it was a few difficult months of re-adjusting again to a single life. As John lennon once said, 'life is what happens when you're making other plans.'
The 'resident' cats stayed, and are the best of company, and keep me entertained, or maybe I entertain them, ha!
For those that do not know, I was injured in Iraq. Injuries to my spine and knees, receiving some leg surgery in July 2007, so after many months of rehab, I was almost as good as new. In addition to these injuries was substantial hearing loss too. In 2010 I had other issues that followed me home which I am told is from 'combat trauma', but I get on with my life, always moving forward.
With my spare time, I was active within the Australian Veteran community, and now the American Veteran community thru the US Veterans of Foreign Wars.
I have a great network of friends. I always live life to the fullest, and appreciate simple things, like a morning walk, sunrises and sunsets.
Relationship wise, in late 2007 I met Mary-Beth. She's very nice (younger than me, ha!), slim, trim and of course blonde. I've always had a weakness for blondes. She teaches school, and is fun to be with. We were engaged in 2012.
I was living at Pacific Harbour on Banksia Beach on Bribie Island (google that if you want to too). I was just 125 steps to the water's edge. Great crabbing and fishing, and endless beaches! You can't beat life on a tropical island. To sum up, one lived life there to the fullest, enjoying the warm winters, and the lovely tropical summers too.
In October of 2012, just after my 53rd birthday, and after much thought, I packed it in with the Army, now officially retired and pensioned off. After 37+ yrs of service in two armies, They call it a medical discharge. I loved the lifestyle, and the culture, and I miss it all very much. looking back I don't miss the circus, but i sure do miss the clowns. My time in seen me attached to Infantry, Artillery, and logistical support units, along with Army's Marksmanship Training Unit at the School of Infantry..
In July of 2014, My two Siamese cats and myself left Australia for the USA, to be with Mary-Beth. We were married in August of 2014, and we reside in Merrimack New Hampshire, about 70km north of Boston.
I am semi - retired, and use my time as best I can. I work on call in armed executive protective services out of Boston. Should anyone want to contact me, feel free..
Regards to all,
Wes Allen
