Richard's Story

I have worked full time, for the most part, since I graduated from Bremen. I held full time jobs even while attending college but I could never find a real interest, so I took only those classes that interested me. Therefore I have no degree. It lead to many interesting vocations, most of them short lived, until at age 21 I took a job as office manager (Gopher) with a tunnel contractor out of Detroit. I was considered too small and too stupid to be allowed down in the "Hole" as it is very dangerous work. So with a little thought I convinced the night superintendent, with a bottle of scotch,to allow me access to the tunnel while the tunnel machie was boring. What a RUSH! I immediately knew what I wanted to do as far as a vocation. By age 35 I felt that I might know enough to start my own business and survive. So at age 35 we moved to Houston, Texas (married less than one year with her two children-her prior husband killed in an auto accident and me divorced two years prior) and joined up, as an equal partner, with someone who had been in business for many years. I didn't know the man except for a 1 hour meeting that was arranged by someone else I really didn't know through a vendor that the man I was working for at the time used as a suppl...Expand for more
ier. That took real gonzos and to this day I can't believe my wife Nancy agreed to take the chance. She constantly told me I could do it and so we decided to try. We only had $20,000.00 between us and the clothes on our backs. I gave this guy $10,000.00 of it and took the chance. After 1 year I decided that I didn't like his way of doing business (bribes, etc.) so we parted company after I got my $10,000.00 back and I started out on my own (with a fourteen thousand dollar loan on a truck). Today I am a small businessman with a company that does between 6-7 million a year in sales (no bribes,no payoffs,no political contributions, etc.). All public works projects for the City of Houston. Where else but in America. Too bad the whining liberals and their socialist programs and anti-business stance are making it more and more impossible for our children to ever have a hope of realizing this dream. Update- I retired in 2009 and have been living in Fulshear, Texas (About 35 miles west from downtown Houston). I'm actually finding myself as busy and possibly even busier than when I was running my business. My wife Nancy also started a business (full service salon) in 1985 and sold it to one of our daughters in the 90's and it is still going today.
