Jodi's Story

Life Nine days after graduation, on June 25, 1988, my daughter Ana was born. I dedicated myself to being a mother to her. After marrying her daddy, Javier, on Jan. 29, 1989, I settled into being wife and homemaker, too. One of the first things I had to learn was to make authentic Mexican food like mole, nopales, ceviche, pozole, beans, rice and the like. I can even make homemade corn tortillas, but after all these years, I still haven't gotten the hang of making flour tortillas. We took a trip to Guadalajara and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in Sept. 1989 and about 9 months later our son, Xavier, was born (June 21, 1990). We moved to Stockton at the end of April 1991 due to Javier getting a job transfer. I worked part time at Mervyn's for about a year (92-93), but quit a few months after I found out I was expecting our 3rd child. Pedro was born Jan. 14, 1994, and again I stayed home with him for a couple of years until I decided to give the Real Estate business a try when he was about 3 or 4 years old. Selling houses just wasn't my "cup of tea" so I decided to take a typing/computer class to learn Word, Excel and such programs. In the summer of 1999 I was hired as a bilingual paraprofessional within Ripon Unified School District. I have been working at Ripon Elementary since, and I love my job! I am off when the kids are off, nearby when they need me, and am very satisfied with my job as parent/teacher interpreter, teacher aide, etc. Javier works as a truck driver for a swimming pool company in Livermore. His major pasttime is playing baseball with a local league along with Xavier. Ana ranked #5 in her (high school) senior class and is a go-getter straight A student. She is graduating from the University of Pacific on May 15, 2010 with a BA in Liberal Studies (planning to be a teacher). Xavier graduated from high school on May 29, 2008, and is currently attending San Joaquin Delta College. He is the quiet one and a wonderful artist. This kid can draw. He was also his 8th grade class' American Scholastic Achievement champion! Pedro will talk your ears off, is a show off, loves to old school dance (break dancing) and does an awesome Michael Jackson im...Expand for more
mitation...could be an actor, salesman or lawyer...and wants to be the most popular boy in his class! He is finishing his sophomore year at Ripon High School now. We went to Huejuquilla el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico from June 17 to June 29, 2005 to celebrate my mother-in-law and father-in-law's 50th wedding anniversary. This was the first time that my daughter and I had gone there. (The boys had gone with their dad before). It was wonderful! Huejuquilla is a very small town with a lot of outlying ranch communities. Javier is from one of these small ranches called El Salitre de Abajo. We went there, too, and bought a small piece of land right next to his parents' place. Eventually we will build a small house for use as vacation home. The 50th celebration was wonderful. All 6 children were in attendance along with their spouses and 17 out of 20 grandchildren! They renewed their vows. We had Mariachi in the church and during dinner; had another small group known as a conjunto between 6pm and 9pm; and then danced until 2 in the morning to "Banda La Verdadera." It was a wonderful experience. I only wish we could have had more time to be turists. After living all my life in California, I FINALLY got to visit Disneyland in June 2007! We went to California Adventure as well. I would like to go again, but with a little more time to see some of the other things in the area. I'd like to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame some time. 10/16/12 - update: Ana graduated with her BA in Diversified Studies (liberal arts) in May of 2010. She is still working toward becomming a teacher, but given the budget crises and the issues with cuts to schools, that has not become a reality yet. Xavier is a Dental Assistant with a company that travels around to skilled nursing facilities. He makes us laugh with his stories of the little old ladies flirting with him. Pedro is doing some minor studying this year and plans to enlist in the Air Force in the fall of 2013. Javier is still a truck driver and I am still working at the elementary school, but they changed my title from Bilingual Paraprofessional to Bilingual Family Liaison. I still love what I do even though the pay isn't great.
