Wilf's Story

March 10 2009 The Story? Well here goes! My schooling started at Malvern House on Richmond Ave and ended at Oak Bay High School, In between I attended Willows School and University School. I have very few happy memories of my schooling as most of it was very rigid discipline. I was a maverick and refused to fit into any slot that my parents and teachers tried to put me into. I would probably have been diagnosed with some form of ADS however on the other hand a great many of my Masters and Teachers would not be looked at favourably today by the Judiciary for their form of discipline. Some of my favourite Teachers included Mr. Creadle and Capt. Proudfoot from Malvern House - At the moment I can not recall any Teacher from Willows - University School favourites included Mr. Cropper and Col. Girard - at Oak Bay High I think everybody's favourite was Gary Taylor. My happiest memories seem to stem from that old neighbourhood of mine North Oak Bay specifically Uplands, Nottingham, Estevan, thence to Willows Beach. Names of friends and neighbours slip into mind - Joan Fletcher, Heather and Diane Hayward, Bob Straith, Roger Bernard, Susan Dillabough, Murray McIntyre, Bruce Liddel, Val Lomas, John Guild, Marilyn and Maureen McDonald and many more. It was a fun neighbourhood to be raised in and I have many happy memories of that place. Included and definitely not limited to were: the rowboat caper to Jimmy Chicken (Mary Tod) Island -age 8 yrs playing cowboys,I was the outlaw sentenced to hang in Bob Straith¿s garage - age 9 hanging out at Willows Beach especially after a storm - age 8 yrs to yesterday four of us taking turns driving a ¿39 Hupmobile replete with rumble seat - age 16 yrs my first love as a young teenager Deanne Moore - age 16 yrs Tony Little taking me for a ride on his Triumph motorcycle - age 14 yrs Many, many more visuals come to light when I¿m out strolling the beach and I delight in those memories. Sometimes they come to me as a still picture more often as a short movie. A big thank you to all those people whom I knew as a youngster growing up in that old neighbourhood of mine, thanks for the memories. More to come. March 16 2009 After one year at Oak Bay High ( in grade 12 at University School I failed Social Studies and English Literature and I went to Oak Bay to pick up these subjects) I couldn¿t wait to get out and start working to support myself. While my classmates were making preparations for U...Expand for more
niversity, College or joining the Military (the Korean conflict was ending and Vietnam was beginning to heat up) I was just eager to start an independent life style. Although I did try to join the Airforce I wasn¿t accepted because of an eye injury I suffered as a child leaving me with sight in one eye only. I joined Jack Henderson¿s team at the Henderson Low Cost at the corner of Fort and Richmond which is now the site of the Fort Royal Medical building. I soon discovered that this was not where my talents lay and I began training as a photographer eventually becoming a portrait photographer travelling BC and Alberta. In Alberta I met, courted and married Erika. Erika had one daughter and we had three more children together. I worked for Eaton¿s in Lethbridge for several years, becoming assistant Manager of the camera department and left the store after spending a year working in window display of which I had a talent for composition, colour, fashion and understood the value of display merchandising. I was active in the Jaycees and through which was instrumental in introducing seat belts into the Lethbridge area. I spent seven years in Alberta finally separating from my marriage and after a mutual agreement with Erika my eldest son, Jim, and I moved back to Victoria. I quickly looked for a job and found employment at Spratt and Associates as a draftsman. I soon learned that I was not suited for this field however I stuck it out for seven years. After which I met and married my second spouse Trish. During this period I took the Real Estate Course passed the Exams (barely) and took a position with Block Brothers Reality. After a training period with Block Brothers I moved on to Bayshore Realty finishing up my Real Estate career with Western Homes after ten years. I thoroughly enjoyed the Real Estate challenge after which I again was a single father as Trish and I went our separate ways. I then met and married my third spouse Marie to whom I have been happily married for thirty-two years. I happened to be Marie¿s third spouse as well - it seems that we both eventually got it right. Following this I became a Property Manager for nineteen years and thoroughly enjoyed that challenge as well. We are now in the early 1990¿s as my story is unfolding and my biggest challenge is just starting. As it is turning out today (2009) this was the most rewarding time of my life. It actually began back in 1955....... more to come.
