William's Story
Life
This fall finds Sue and myself home in Alaska again after a four year stay in the midwest. Sue had early retired from her director's position at the University of Alaska, Anchorage to train for her other true passion. So then June 2003 to June of 2007 she/we were on a midwest quest, of sorts.
There are eight or so places a person can train to become a Lutheran Minister and we chose Dubuque Iowa as that place. A one year Internship at two small rural churches in far NW Kansas was year three of the four year journey.
The liklyhood of a church assignment in the upper midwest for a new Lutheran Minister is very nearly 100%. Nearly. With Alaska in the reresume, however Sue was the one and only draft pick for assignment to Alaska. We always hoped to make it back to Alaska, someday.
We moved from Lansing to Anchorage in 1993. We were shocked and very pleased to be sent back to Alaska! Once your four years of seminary training are completed a...Expand for more
nd you pass the boards, you are put into a pool of all graduate seminarians from all of the seminaries. A "draft" is held amoung the 65 Bishops in Chicago each spring to fill the many new church and vacancies due to retirements. That then, is how we ended up back in Alaska. Since our marriage in 1979, Sue and I have lived in California, Utah, back to Michigan where I owned a Flyfishing Proshop and guide service.
Sue graduated with a Drama/English BA and has taught American Sign Language for twenty years. Her first MA is in Adult Education. She has written four books and a fifth is to be released in the spring.
In Alaska I have guided (including President Jimmy Carter in 1994) taught at the community college and ran the publishing company that published Sue's first book. Our now 23 year old son, Michael manages a Borders Bookstore. I am now just starting a new career as well with the USDA Wildlife Services. It has been a very good thirty years.
