William's Story
Life
After graduating from HS at Clifton, NJ, I attended college at Chadron State College, in Chadron, NE for three years. I became bored with college life and joined the Army in 1975. I did 3 years as a 19D (Cavalry Scout) in the 1st Infantry Division at Ft Riley, KS. In 1978 I got out of the Army and returned to college at the University of South Carolina. In 1979 my wanderlust began again and I left school without a degree and began to drift north, acting in plays at regional theatre companies and dinner theatres. I finally finished my BA in Theatre Arts in 1980 at SUNY in Albany. I started graduate school at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln after that, but ran out of money. In 1981 I rejoined the US Army and attended Officer Candidate School at Ft Benning. I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry and in 1982, after attending Airborne and Ranger Schools, I was sent to my first assignment as an officer in the 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, HI. I returned from Hawaii in 1985 as a Captain and after attending the Infantry Officer Advanced Course and Pathfinder Schools at Ft Benning, I completed the Special Forces Qualification Course at Ft Bragg, and was awarded the coveted Green Ber...Expand for more
et. I held a number of positions in various Special Forces assignments and saw combat in Panama in 1989 in conjunction with the invasion of Panama called Operation Just Cause and in 1990 in the 1st Gulf War. I was promoted to Major in June 1993, shortly after completing the Command and General Staff College. I completed a short tour in Mogadishu, Somalia for 6 months Jul-Dec 1993. I was subsequently assigned to 1st Special Forces Group where I held positions as the Group Adjutant and as Commander, C Company, 3rd Battalion. I returned to Ft Bragg in 1996 and was reassigned to the Special Warfare Center & School. In 1999 I retired from the Army with over 20 years service. After retiring from active duty in 1999 I worked for Northrop-Grumman in Ft Leavenworth, KS as a Special Operations Forces Analyst on an Army contract. However, in Feb 2004 I accepted a civil-service position as an Anti-terrorism Vulnerability Assessment Team Chief (GS-13) with the US Army in Heidelberg Germany. In October 2006 I returned from Germany and began working for the Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as their Lead Physical Security Specialist. I still enjoy motorcycling, sky-diving, and martial arts.
