William's Story

After graduating SHS in 1960, spent four happy years ar Our Lady of the Valley H.S. In Orange.. Although it required two bus rides each way, it was well worth it since the Valley was a great school with talented faculty and super classmates. Some of us still keep in contact via Facebook and this year our class of '64 celebrated our 50 year reunion; nearly 40 classmates attended. From the Valley it was to Montclair State for B.S. dual major in Speech and Speech Therapy. After a year or so at Purdue University the draft found me in the Army; basic at Fort Dix, Advanced Training at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana and, following that, my first assigment for nearly one year at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. It was great duty working for the Adjutant General of the academy. Then, a transfer to Darmstadt, Germany where I worked in Operations and Intelligence S3 for V Corps Artillery HQ until my discharge in 1971. Purdue welcomed me back and I completed my MS in Speech Pathology in January of '72. As luck would have it, I found a job in Rolla, Missouri with a regional center of the Department of Mental Health and began working as a Speech Pathologist. I married Susan Wagley in Rolla in 1974 and we celebrated our 40th anniversary this past June.In 1989 I became Executive Director of the agency and became responsible for 75 employees and n...Expand for more
early 5000 clients located in 15 Missouri counties, many receiving service through the Center. It was an exciting time indeed! I was able to retire from that position in 1998 with full benefits, so I did just that! During our marriage til that point and for the first eight years of our retirement we travelled extensively, visiting such far reaching places as India, Nepal, most European countries from Iceland to Greece and throughout North America, totalling 22 nations. It was great, but the urge to do some meaningful work again was strong, and despite numerous clubs and volunteer activities I returned to work in April of 2006. I am currently employed by Results Radio as the drivetime co-host of their Morning Mayor Show which is on the air from 6 am til 9 a.m. five days a week. Our format is talk, news, weather, and sports and it has a strong local flavor of the southcentral part of Missouri. It's been on the air continuously for 57 years. You can hear us on the web by loading the Tunein app and finding KTTR 1490 a.m. in Rolla, Missouri. (We also broadcast of FM but only AM is streamed.) Would love to hear from any classmates from Sacred Heart, Class of 1960. Of course the ensuing years have not all been as rosy as they sound, above, but it's all been interesting, exciting, and worthwhile. Drop a line if you see this and we can catch up again!
