William's Story

I graduated from MCHS (Macon County High School) in Montezuma, Ga. in 1963 and went to Mercer University in Macon. In 1967 I finished at Mercer with a degree in German and got a job teaching at Lakeside High School in Atlanta where I stayed for four years, then went back to grad school at UGA for a masters and doctorate. During the UGA years I taught in the German department. In 1970 I studied in Germany on a German government scholarship. After finishing my education I returned to DeKalb County to their junior college, DeKalb College, where I worked as...Expand for more
a professor and administrator for 27 years. I retired in 2001 and have been pursuing hobbies (music, taking self-study college courses, target shooting, reading, watching German TV, etc.) ever since. I have one daughter from my first marriage and a son from my second. I have one granddaughter and two grandsons. I enjoy hearing from former classmates from MCHS and Mercer and have even heard from some of my former high school students at Lakeside. As Faulkner said, "the past isn't over, it isn't even in the past." My best wishes to you all! Bill Cheek

One difference in Germany and the US is their love of eating outside, even in cold weather. We like it here too, but usually in warmer weather. If it's sunny out over there, that's reason enough to eat outside.
My mom, a teenager in the 20s, out for a Sunday afternoon drive at Whitewater. She lived to be 91 years old, had four children, and was the single most influential person in my life. And, she was cool, always loved a nice
