Bill's Story
School
I enjoyed most of my days at SHS..Here is a file photo from the "archives" of the Spri-Hian in April or May of 1964 taken from the boys Sports Dept..I still remember my Great Batting Average of .405 after 9 games..This was certainly good enough for a First Team ALL-DELCO selection, a few handshakes, phone calls, conversations, and specific "offers" from MLB scouts who were expressing interest in me . However my "bad luck" continued to near the end of the school year, All fun and glory would disappear as I broke my hand shortly after this photo was taken(May 1964) and I "settled" for ALL-DELCO Honorable Mention because I never played another game for good old SHS again.
College
Attended Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science directly from HS graduation in 1964 to 1969..(back then it was a 5 year study..today it's 6 years).During the 1960's "Pharmacy" had the reputation as a strong academic School of Sciences and I liked that, but nevertheless it was still a small local campus with strong ties to U of PENN and University City.....I Played Basketball there for 2 years and played With AND Against some very GOOD talent primarily from Our Philly area and New Jersey. .In 1967-68-69 The Phila 76ers practiced daily at our then Brand NEW Gym. I got to see & meet the Great WILT CHAMBERLAIN, along with BILLY CUNNINGHAM, LUKE JACKSON, HAL GREER, CHET WALKER,and of course our own locals, BILLY MELCHIONNI and WALLY JONES from Villanova and MATTY GOUKAS from St Joes. The Coach was Alex Hannum assisted by (Dr.)Jack Ramsey. That was a Great,Great Time for me. We also used to see our "old" high school teammate and 1966 SHS Grad GEOFF PETRIE come to town with his PRINCETON TIGERS BASKETBALL team to play the teams from THE BIG FIVE.....GEOFF as we all know was a Magnificent Athlete and a Phenomenal Basketball Player who would later be voted the 1970-71 NBA BASKETBALL "ROOKIE OF THE YEAR" co-sharing it with DAVE COWENS of THE BOSTON CELTICS---WOW---- it was an honor to play basketball and baseball with him ..Lots of wonderful times were spent at U. of PENN..The Palestra, Franklin Field, Frat Parties ,etc..I LOVED THAT AREA then and still do ..I Got appointments & acceptances to PENN Dental school in 1969..but by then we had decided to get married in April 1970 and I had my fill of academics. . Our marriage "produced" 5 Beautiful, Healthy CHI...Expand for more
LDREN that the LORD has blessed us with. So far these "FIRST" 35 years of our blessed marriage have been better than any words can describe.
Workplace
My Work Biography is not all that important to me .. .Although my research and discovery of NEW medications and drugs was VERY rewarding for me at the time, I quickly learned that what WAS & STILL IS MOST IMPORTANT AND MOST REWARDING is CONTINUING THE FUN TIMES, HEALTHY TIMES, AND JOYOUS TIMES WITH MY GORGEOUS "Best Friend", AND LOVING WIFE OF 35 YEARS AND OUR 5 CHILDREN (and 1 Grand-Child)...AFTER 35 YEARS OF MARRIAGE THE BEST TIMES IN LIFE ARE, AND ALWAYS WILL BE WITH OUR LOVING FAMILIES.....I EASILY WOULD GIVE AWAY THE $$$ ,& THE TITLES & THE HOOPLA FOR ANOTHER 35 YEARS OF THE SAME WITH MY LOVE
Military
"Unfortunately" I never made it into the Armed Services and no doubt inevitably to Vietnam ( my lottery # was 108 so I knew I was definitely going over )...During my Senior Year at College, I completely destroyed both my ACL,and my MCL and shattered 90% of the meniscus in my one knee. .I didn't exactly know it then but I Was Thru With College/Organized Basketball for Life, I would never again return to an organized hardwood court game EVER.... It truly was a very serious injury "back in the day" ..Graduation was very near so I couldn't get immediate surgery because I would have missed too much critical class time . As it was, I missed 5 FULL class days, which was a lot of material..I never regained a "normal" walking stride until nearly 2 years later...Thank God I made it thru Final Exams limping along and graduated with my class 2 months later in June of 1969 with honors..Today at 58 years of age..I STILL FEEL that old Basketball injury more than ever ...The ARMY "didn't want any part of me" in 1969 especially after the team of Doctors via the military medical staff at 401 N Broad Street saw my leg at the induction exam.
I was subsequently "Rejected" and reclassified 4F..so I went forward with my Professional Life in 1969 and also married my "best friend" and sweetheart in April 1970 , whom I met in November of 1965..I LOVE the fact that we both were still teenagers (19 y/o) when we first met and fell deeply in love. We SHARED SO MUCH THEN and STILL DO..It has been that way practically each and every day of our 35 years..I can only Pray and Wish for ANOTHER 35 years of the same.
