William's Story
Well let's see; Attended and Graduated CSM, AA in Broadcasting. Uncle Sam started knocking on my door, joined the Navy, promised the world in broadcasting but the Navy had a little line in there called "the need of the service". We were the last boot camp in San Diego under the draft, 8 days after joining the Navy, Nixon ended the draft. Assigned to NAS Guam, Fire crew, Security, Intel and eventually PN3. Worked nights on Kuam Guam, did the news from 6pm to 7pm , was relayed via short wave radio on American Forces Radio Network. Was a DJ Sunday's for four hours. Once in awhile I was put onto SAR Missions through out the Marianas. Announced the end of the Vietnam War and evacuation. Went on 24 hour duty with processing and debriefing refugees.
4 years active and 2 years reserve. I decided that broadcasting was not for me and started my career in retail. Although I sometimes kick my self when my Professor told me about a great new opportunity in Atlanta Georgia...Expand for more
with a start up company that would do all news 24 hours a day; I said that will never work, well it did and it's called CNN. Manager for Ace Hardware, Assistant and Store Manager for Kmart 18 years. Back then they were the King of retail. Meant and married my wife Jan in Phoenix. Left Kmart, joined OfficeMax Store Manager, Staples, Store Manager, Assistant Manager with OSH and probably the best move ever made Assistant Store Manager with Lowe's Home Improvement for 17 Years. My wife and I have two adult sons, grandson and grand daughter, and between them we have 6 Great Grand-kids. My wife and I are now retired, traveling and photographing our adventures.
We stopped by El Camino about 6 months ago. Needs a lot of paint and upgrades. I remember El Camino as a vibrant exciting time in my life. I grew up quickly in the Navy, saw my share of hijackings and plane crashes, but most of all it prepared me for today, Life is short and you must live it for the future!
