William's Story
Life
After getting out of Hofstra I didn't know what I wanted to do (those of you living around Allentown may remember I was DJing at weddings for a while) and ended up drifting down to Florida and eventually got a job writing for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. In 1991, I took a leave of absence and volunteered for civilian work on an Israeli Defense Forces tank base during the Gulf War. The following year, I went back to school and got my MBA from The American University in Washington, DC. I married Eileen, a friend of my Hofstra roommate, during grad school. Afterwards, I spent a year as a full-time dad before we moved to New York and I went to work as finance editor for a trade journal called Chemical Week.
A couple years later, I was recruited by Deutsche Bank Securities as an associate stock analyst. My brilliant Wall Street career lasted about eight months before I was laid off. I went...Expand for more
into consulting and, just as I was joining a firm, it was acquired by IBM. I've been with IBM Consulting since 1998.
Since 2004, though, I've been back at financial journalism on a freelance basis. Business has been good and, if it keeps up, I'm going to have to make a decision about IBM in the next couple years.
In my spare moments, I've been writing some fiction. Nothing that's been published yet, but I get rejection letters from better and better editors every time I submit something. I keep fit (or try to) by running, swimming, and weight training.
Eileen stays home with our three sons, Eddie (b. 1994), James (1999) and John Liberty (2001). When I'm not at a client meeting (I'm on roughly 25% travel), I work out of the house as well. Business has taken me to London, Paris and Milan -- but the flip side is it has also taken me to Huntsville, Lincoln and Boise.
We live on Long Island.
