William's Story

The wildest thing I ever did in school was taking typing class. , I was the only male in the class and at first every girl in the class ignored me. I sat in the back corner and there was no one within three chairs of me, front or side. So along about the third week I noticed the girls were sitting closer to me. Now by the sixth week I was surrounded. Then they started fussing with each other over who was going to get to sit next to me. They never talked to me outside of class, in the hall or on the street, I didn't exist except in the typing class. All of that attention was not about me. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Don Dudley, because he was one of the funniest people I have ever met. We had a lot of fun when we were kid...Expand for more
s. . IWhat about me that would surprise everyone at my next high school reunion? Someone would say, "you know, to look at him, you'd think he was just sleeping". My first job was at Tim and Joes, where I got paid sixty cents an hour to fry doughnuts. What I remember most about it is the day I learned to fry doughnuts. They told me that any doughnuts that fell apart I could eat. So I fried the doughnuts and loaded them on a dowel rod and set them on a rack. Then I would pour icing over them. I fried twelve dozen of which eight fell apart when I iced them. One of the owners, a nice mexican gentleman, came up to me and seeing all the icing on my face shook his head and started cussing I was only twelve years old I had no idea what he was talking about.
