William's Story

School I grew up in South Shore, Kentucky (just across the Ohio River from Portsmouth, Ohio) I attended Sunshine Elementary School where my father was principal. I attended McKell High School Freshman year until our three community high schools (Mckell, Wurtland and Greenup High) were combined into what is known today as Greenup County High School. I created the Musketeer on the Gym wall the first year the high school was opened. My mother taught English, Latin and Shakespeare at Greenup County High. I was interested in all aspects of cartooning and art. I loved creating posters and banners inwhich parallels what I am doing today: mainly posters and banners and inhouse promos for our printing company. College Education: The Columbus College of Art & Design, Columbus, Ohio 1975-79 Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Majoring in Advertising Design Minoring in Package Design Achievements: Merit award from the Braun Packaging Corporation 1978. Award from The Liquid-Box Corporation 1978 for two Christmas Card concept designs. Workplace My work experience is as follows: May 2005-Present: VERTIS INC. - APS Division (Dayton, OH) Position: On-Site Production Artist for a Grocery Chain. Design & layout Grocery Inserts and Advertisements. July 1997-May 2005: VERTIS INC. (formerly: Treasure Chest Advertising) (Columbus, OH) Position: Prepress Tech / Graphic Design Specialist responsible for Graphic Design of banners, brochures and flyers and problem-solving computer software issues; electronic imposition and film output utilitizing an Agfa Avantra 30 SelectSet; using Quarkxpress, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Multi-Ad Creator, Freehand and Photoshop. AGFA DuoScan Desktop scanner used for b/w & 4-color photos and lineart. Photoshop manipulations and color corrections for clients. Creation of PDF files through Postscript > Acrobat Distiller > Exchange; imposition of files by Computer-to-plate technology (PREPS software). In-House Layout and Graphic Designer for newspaper publications, mailers, ads. Photoshop work involving clipping paths and color corrections. 4-color scanning with a Screen DTS Scanner. AccuSet 1000 film output. Design brochures and various flyers. Pierce, FL) Position: Advertising Department Artist February 1992-January 1993: Sunburst Advertising Agency (Port St. Lucie,FL) Position: Freelance Computer Advertising Design Designed catalogs, brochures and magazine ads. February 1993-May 1993: Graphics Illustrated (Rivera Beach,FL) Position: Prep-house - worked with a Colorpoint, Linotronic and Selectset Imaging printer; prepared client's desktop work for colorbreaks, trappings and overall preprint preparations. February 1983-April 1990: Thoroughbred Publishers, Inc. (Lexington, KY) Position: Editorial/Advertising Designer/ Production Mgr. Layout/Design and supervisor over art department time schedules for weekly 200 page 5-color journal The Thoroughbred Record. Editorial and advertising layouts; dummied magazine weekly for editorial, advertising and art departments, out-of-house stripping company and printer. Scheduled nightly signature forms for printer and checked colorkey signatures. Publication sold out to NY based company. August 1979-January 1983: Times Media Publications, Inc. (Lexington,KY) Position: Art Director/Designer Layout and design (conventional mechanicals for all production work) for various regional publications: Lexington Times Newspaper Tabloid, Lifestyle Apartment Guide, Bluegrass Woman Magazine, Bluegrass Feature Magazine. Publications went out of business
