William Kenneth's Story

=========================== Life Hello everyone. =========================== Update: On August 11, 2009 I was hired by ManTech International Corp. as a Senior Systems Application Analyst/Programmer and I am a certified Oracle Database Administrator. I support Naval Sea Logistics Center, Mayport. I am actually working with my former co-workers from SPAWAR (before the BRAC). Everyone in the building knew I was going to be working there before I was hired. Nice to see some familiar faces everyday besides my own. =========================== I am still retired but glad to be working. Back in 2005 the NAVY BRAC'd expendable Military and Civilian activities. I worked for SPAWAR Systems Center, Charleston, Jacksonville Office. I retired effective 03/02/2007. ======================= Check out my web site at w w w 'dot' kensgiftshop 'dot' n e t. [remove the spaces]. =====History===== After HS I enlisted in the USAF and was inducted on Friday, August 13, 1971. I was assigned to the 3724th Basic Military Training Squadron, Flight 1285, Lackland AF Base, San Antonio, Texas. I completed basic military training in September 1971 and was assigned to Sheppard AF Base, Witchita Falls, Texas. Our barracks were located on Avenue J in view of the Municipal Airport runway which was alos the base runway. I attended school for 13 weeks and was trained as an Aircraft Propeller Repairman. My orders sent me to the 6549th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squardron (CAMS) at Patrick AFB, Satellite Bch, Fl. [south of Cocoa Bch] from Feb. 1972 to Dec. 1972. In October 1972 I received orders that assigned me to the 374th Tactical Airlift Wing/Field Maintainence Squadron, Ching Chaun Kang AB (CCK), Taiwan. I was stationed there from Jan. 23, 1973 to Nov. 1, 1973. After completing 2 temporary duty (TDY) assignments to Thailand our squadron was moved and reassigned to Clark AB, Philippines. I was stationed there from Nov. 1, 1973 to Jan. 23, 1974, my rotation date. I returned to the USA on Jan. 25, 1974. I received orders in Aug. 1973 for Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi. Wanting another Florida assignment I persuaded a fellow airman, one of my tech school classmates, to swap orders with me (he was assigned to Eglin AFB, Florida). After talking to the First Sergeant of our squadron we sent our orders to the personnel office of the Air Force and received our new orders about Oct. 1973. My new orders assigned me to the 55th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squardron (ARRS) at Eglin AFB, Valparaiso, Fl. (I lived in Ft. Walton Bch.). While at Eglin I married Barbara Hodge (EHS c/o 1970) on Mar. 15, 1974. After the Air Force, 12 Aug 1975, we moved back to Jax. I worked for my grandfather, Willie Earl 'Uncle Bill' Touchton, Sr. delivering cars for Southside Ford and then delivering and selling auto parts for McEvoy Parts and Service on Richard Road. In Feb. 1976 I got a call for an interview for a job offer with the US Navy, Civil Service. I interviewed for the job and got a position at NAS JAX as a Production Controller on Mar. 1, 1976 at Naval Rework Facility (NARF) Jacksonville. I was employed by NARF/Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP) Jacksonville until Aug. 14, 1987. I had applied for a position in Jun. 1987 and was picked up by the data processing center, Navy Regional Data Center (NARDAC) Jacksonville as a Programmer/Analyst. Since that time the position has included Programming [DOS and Windows based languages], Oracle database administrator, Systems Administrator, Information Systems Security Officer and Customer Service Specialist and usually all at the same time. Along the way I've been a mobile DJ, radio DJ, radio show producer, radio commercial producer and entrepreneur (I have a catalog mail order business w w w 'dot' kensgiftshop 'dot' n e t)[remove the spaces]. ================================ As of July 2008 I am working for a company that provides ushers/ticket takers for Jacksonville Municipal Stadium where the Jacksonville Jaguars play. to several NFL and other sports teams around the country. I work only on game day. More later....."See you in the funny papers!" ================================ School School life was enjoyable. During my first few years of elementary school (58-65) I guess I wanted to be friends with everybody but the "bully" system was in place. I found myself on the end of many nasty remarks from people I thought were my friends. Having no older brother to "teach me the ropes" I ended up fending for myself and usually losing. By the sixth grade I learned to be just a face in the crowd and not to draw attention to myself. So much for elementary school. Junior High (65-68) was a little better. The "bully" system was replaced with the "popular people" system. I found friends, who like me, had gotten the wrong end of the stick and we bonded. My friends and I, most from my neighborhood, would ride the same bus and at first had most of the same classes. But then I discovered "girls". I "went steady" with one girl for almost 2 years (7th - 8th grade). By the last year of jr. high (67-68) I guess she was tired of me and she broke it off and we never spoke again. When the teachers went on strike I met new friends because of the scheduling of split sessions and met even more girls. Senior High (68-71) is where I hit my stride socially, I could drive and I owned a car. I seemed to "fit in" and could be my real self. I didn't have to be just a face in the crowd. Although I didn't focus on the books, I did the socializing thing. In the summer of '68 I had gotten my drivers license and my father gave me his car, much as it was, a 1959 English Ford Angelia and the use of the family car when my parents didn't need it, a Chevy Station Wagon. 10th grade (68-69) I drove my friends to school Chip, Nelson, Ruth Ann and sometimes Bill and/or Dale, the car only seated 4 in comfort 5 if we squeezed 3 in the back seat, but we had a blast. Everyone pitched in for gas except Chip, he still owes me for that, too (ha ha). I took drivers ed just for the insurance discount so my parents (me) wouldn't have to pay so much. Before the year was out I got a job and ended up paying for the insurance myself. I met a girl from Riabult at Junior Achievement, we were in the same company, and we dated most of the school year. That summer I stayed with my grandparents and dated some of the girls in there neighborhood. 11th grade (69-70) was fine and I still didn't pay attention to the books, I slide by. Buy now I had a bigger car and could take more people to school. This group was Chip, Nelson, Ruth Ann, Debbie (my sister), Bill and sometimes Dale. Everyone pitched in to buy the gas. I made more friends this year, mostly girls. I met a girl I really got close with. Unfortunatly a certain 'girlfriend' from my past pushed her way back into my life and the relationship with my current girlfriend went south (she graduated in 1970). 12th grade (70-71) was a blast as we were now top of the heep and I gave out as much as I got the 2 years before. Gym class that year was "hell" for everyone and more for the underclasses. The only class I really enjoyed was Journalism II the folks that produced the newspaper, Rampage. I was a reporter but I didn't get published because my stories always got rejected. As a result I created a position, Circulation Manager, which I shared with another member of the staff. We (I) were in charge of distributing the paper to the journalism class members that sold the papers and collected the money and/or unsold papers and turned the money over to the Treasurer. Had a lot of fun. ;-) The car pool was growing now we had Nelson, Ruth Ann, Debbie (my sister), Bobby (my brother), Bill, Charlene and sometimes Dale. Again gas money was provided. By the middle of the school year I had all my points to graduate so I took "easy" classes and did work for some teachers as an aide and had study hall. By the time graduation came around I was in a serious relationship (looking back) and didn't even know it. Hine sight is 20-20 isn't it!
