William's Story
I was at K-Town from 1963 thru 1965. We packed a lot into those two years with formal dances and proms, National Honor Society activities, PYOC and the AYA youth center at Ramstein, working Roads and Grounds in the summers, travel all over Europe and the Holy Land, and Boy Scouts for which I was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
Perhaps most notably at K-Town High, as President of the school's Civic Participation Corps (CPC), the group had the honor of building and presenting the school with the famous K-Town "K" which we lit up at varsity and JV basketball games. No doubt the big "K" was tossed onto the scrap heap long ago but it was a neat legacy while it lasted.
After graduation from K-Town in '65, I attended the American College in Paris my Freshman year, then transferred to the University of North Dakota where I graduated in 1969 with a BA in Modern Languages and a Commission in the U.S. Air Force. Later that year, I got engaged on Labor Day, reported for active duty in late September, began Intelligence School in October and married Rita (Tanner) Kirk in December. While in the Air Force, I completed two Masters Degrees in International Relations and Public Administration.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1989, I started a second career with the ...Expand for more
State of California where I worked in the departments of Health Services, Social Services and Child Support Services. I retired from the state in 2008 and am now active as a Troop leader with the Boy Scouts of America.
Planning for post-retirement, I completed Massage Therapy training in 1997 and am currently on staff at the Natomas Racquet Club in the Massage Department, specializing in Swedish, deep tissue and sports injury prevention and recovery. I also have a mobile practice in the Sacramento area.
These days I spend most of my time writing and promoting my children's picture books, the first of which was released in January 2009. There are currently three books out, all of which are available on Amazon.com and other online booksellers. You can search on "billkirkwrites" for more information. I also enjoy long distance running, camping, backpacking and hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
My wife, Rita, is a Registered Nurse and has completed her Masters Degree in Education and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology. After working in primary care nursing, quality assurance management and nursing education for over 30 years, she is currently a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Sacramento. We have two children and three grandchildren.
