William's Story

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin' Into the future Fly Like An Eagle Lyrics - Steve Miller I suppose that there are many of us "class of '69" graduates that might better understand, now, Steve Miller's lyrics. With the big 6-Oh looming large, I feel as Rip van Winkle must have. I nodded off and 3 years of RMHS passed by, Nod off once again and 4 years of college zipped past. I just blinked and a 21 year Navy career is a distant memory. Not only is time slippin' into the future.....it seems to be accelerating. I cleaned out the attic last month and found a box of High School "treasures". My parents had boxed and shipped them when they moved from Rockville, 25 years ago. I found treasures like my old eagle scout medal, pictures of my High School locker filled with beer cans and the "Anti Establish Mint" (yes, that was an OEM color) Maverick covered in TP (thanks ladies- you made senior year interesting) and most intriguing of all, three RMHS year books (1967-1969). I read through the books and was captivated by many of your inscriptions. I have not seen many of you since our 10th reunion so, I thought a post high school update would be appropriate. Graduation day at Cole Field House seemed like it might never arrive. Once the deed was done, there was a feeling of un-limited freedom. A few of us decided that we should take this new found freedom for a test drive. We packed our camping gear and drove off to the beach. It didn't matter if it was Rehoboth, Ocean City or where ever. Sand, sun and freedom were our main imperatives. For a time, we were able to un-furl our wings and fly-free. Then reality set in. My best friend had to leave early for the academy, many of us got jobs, prepared to leave for college or just drifted apart. I spent the remainder of the Summer wondering what my college experience at Tufts University would bring. Giving up this wonder filled experience of freedom without responsibility was very far from my mind. Tufts was a sobering experience. There was plenty of freedom but now you had to take the responsibility that came with it. Just another process called maturing and growing up. Another RMHS alum was at Tufts. Many of you have seen him on TV, as the State Department's spokesman. My experience at Tufts can be summed up as "hectic" and not quite as enjoyable as it should have been. I was scheduled everyday, from early morning through evening, with one event or another. My course load was so concentrated that I would have been able to graduate a year early. Instead, I entered the graduate school of Economics and concurrently pursued a MA in Economics along with a BS in EE. Every day for 4 years, my course load was math, science and EE, a science lab of some type and graduate courses in Econ. On top of that I piled on Naval ROTC courses and a seasonal sport. I continued to play varsity B...Expand for more
asketball and picked up Lacrosse for my Spring time sport. I look back and really don't know why I did this to myself. Maybe it is like banging your head against a wall, you don't realize how uncomfortable it is at the time but, it feels so good when you stop. In June of 1973, I graduated and was commissioned an Ensign, US Navy, on the USS Constitution, in Boston harbor. My first set of orders sent me to flight school in Pensacola Florida. Talk about freedom. This was nirvana. The Navy sent me to Pensacola to learn to fly AND they were paying me for my trouble. There was no more of the crushing course load that I had experienced in college. Memorize your procedures, visualize the flight maneuvers and show up at the scheduled time. That was it. I spent 2 years in Pensacola flying the T34B, T2C and TA4J. I graduated from flight school and was awarded my "wings of gold:" in 1976. My next orders were to NAS Miramar, San Diego CA to fly the Navy's new fighter (at the time), the F-14 Tomcat. As my Navy career progressed, I went through a series of squadrons. VF-124 as a Tomcat replacement pilot, VF-2 as a "nugget F-14 pilot", 2 months going through Top Gun school, back to VF-124 as an instructor pilot, VF-51 for my F-14 department head tour, VX-4 as the operational test F/A-18 project officer and F-14 test pilot. My last two Navy jobs were on the USS Midway, based in Yokosuka Japan and developmental test pilot at Pacific Missile Test Center. Navy flying was exhilarating. Landing on aircraft carriers, particularly at night, was an E-ticket ride. Dog fighting other jets, at closure speeds of over 1000 miles per hour, got your heart pumping. I also got to shoot the AIM-54C Phoenix missile at full scale targets like the F-4 and F-86 and have a ring side seat as they blew up. I was privileged to graduate from the Top Gun school, fly in the movie and appeared in one of the scenes. (Look for the tallest person in the graduation scene). I have to admit, I was an adrenalin junky. I retired from the Navy after 21 years of service, drove my wife crazy after 6 months retirement and got hired by United Airlines in 1994. I still fly for United. The government changed the retirement age for pilots from 60 to 65, three years ago. I have flown all the Boeing aircraft (727, 737, 747, 757, 767, and 777). I am now a Captain on the Airbus A-320, based at LAX in sunny California. John Longo wrote in my yearbook "Bill. I sincerely hope you will quit clowning around and get serious. They probably won't take any more of that stuff up at Tufts".. Paula Brown ditto-ed John's comments. John, Paula....I'm sure you were right. However, somehow I survived living by the Peter Pan principle. That is, until I got hired by United, 16 years ago....... I never had to grow up. I would love to hear from you.
