Bill's Story
Hi! I'm Bill. I think I was the quiet one in school. We moved a lot when I was a kid, but didn't make friends easily. You may have seen my name right after Ray Tompkins on the sci-fi library book cards. I went to the Junior prom with Charlene Plante, & was in the Senior show (This Week!). After graduation, I spent one memorable year at UMass Amherst. Well, I'm told it was memorable; I don't remember a lot of it. I decided to take a 30+ year sabbatical & reconsider my academic future.
Life
My Kids
My son is 28, a software engineer at Measurement. He graduated from NC State in 2007 as a Computer Sciences major. In addition to skiing, he is now a competitive runner, having run marathons here in NC, Florida, & Nevada. Not bad for a computer geek! ;-)
I have lived in (in order) Massachusetts, Ohio, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Georgia, South Korea, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas (three-month temporary assignment). Each of my moves (once I was out on my own) was job-related. I stopped working in 2010 to go back to school. Working on a BS in computer science. I will graduate (finally!) in 2012. I hope to be a Web Developer when I grow up!
My Job
I was a Project Manager with Sony Ericsson working with the Customer Services division in R&D for new cell phones. I am currently in transition. I still maintain a strong avocation for all things techie!
Past jobs include: Stock clerk, fast food, camp councilor, Pilgrim (guide / interpreter at Plimoth Plantation), ice cream truck driver, factory laborer, security guard at a nuclear power plant, Technical Controller in the U.S. Army, Network Operations Controller, Floor Manager, Network Surveillance Technician, Systems Administration Operator, Database Administrator, Team Leader, Process Engineer, Quality Engineer, Project Manager (at three different...Expand for more
companies).
My Life
I am married to the most wonderfulest woman in the world! (and yes, I invent my own words as needed). Jane is from a large southern family, who have adopted me as a transplanted southerner, & have treated me as one of their own. We travel with several of her cousins & their spouses, & will meet with with (at least) two pair this spring in Myrtle Beach, SC. Jane has two grown children & one grandchild; Jacob, who is now six! He & his dad Wade live outside of Atlanta, Ga, so we don't see them as often as we'd like. Wade owns & runs his own business, making dimensional signs for companies & communities worldwide. One of his signs actually hangs in the RBC Center right here in Raleigh! Jane's daughter Frances (Rain) and her partner Temica live in Brevard, NC, where she is an adjunct professor of graphic design at Brevard College.
We are big Carolina Hurricanes fans. Yes, we have been at every playoff game held in the RBC Center (and celebrated the winning of Lord Stanley in high fashion!). We helped introduce the southern college football tradition of tailgating to NHL hockey, & love nothing better than to grill a steak & enjoy a good red wine with fellow fans before a game.
The Empty Nest syndrome: more of a blessing than a curse! We love to travel, we've taken cruises to the Caribbean & New England/Canada, Alaska rail / cruise, & a two-week London/Scotland excursion (summer '10). Next is Hawaii in 2013. Amazing! Photos on Facebook; look me up & add me as a friend (if you know me).
Before my knees went sour, I enjoyed downhill skiing. I still enjoy SCUBA diving, but haven't had much chance to enjoy this. These days, my physical activities are limited to walking & swimming (either when the weather is nice, or at indoor pools). I did try water skiing once, but had a hard time finding a lake with a hill in it.
