William's Story
Following CHS, I went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, graduating in 1962 with a BS degree (surprised?) and an ROTC commission in the Infantry. After a hitch in the 101st Airborne, I was lucky enough to be sent to the Army Language School, where I learned some passable Spanish. I then served the 8th Special Forces Group in Panama and the Dominican Republic for about 5 years. I did my time in Viet Nam, got out and worked overseas for an un-namable government agency for a few years. I finally got wise, quit and went to work for Ross Perot's EDS in 1974, where I began to learn something about computers and programming. Later, I received an MBA in Finance from Harvard, and continued to work in and about computer systems until my retirement in 2005. I married a girl named Sue, a school teacher from Texas whom I met in Panama in 1966. We lived in 23 different cities, including San Juan, Puerto Rico, where our third child was born. three girls and a boy, and now have seven grandchildren. Sue died suddenly in 2021. I'm retired now, of course, and live in McKinney, Texas, which is North of Dallas on the road to Sherman. I have a nice machine shop that I like to putz around in, and spend the rest of my time reading, shooting, traveling and visiting grandkids. I got involved in some long-term mission work in Peru years back, and have now made 18 trips down there, usually taking advantage of each trip to spend a few more weeks sightseeing in the rest of South America. My best trip was in 2018, when I traveled the up the rivers on the East side of the Andes in Peru to Iquitos, and then down the Amazon to Belem on the Atlantic coast of Brazil. I've also spent some time in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania), the UK and Western Europe and, of course, South East Asia. I'm an orphan now, my folks have both passed, as did my brother Dave in 2012. If you're ever in Big D, look me up!
